What do you do with an Aldi's cart that was given to you without paying?

If you're given a cart at Aldi rather than using your own quarter, when you're done shopping do you hand off your cart to the next person or keep the quarter for yourself, while getting a quarter from the cart next to you? There was some weird grump at Aldi earlier who got all defensive about, getting his money back when it wasn't even his to begin with.

Interesting everyday life detail. I never buy anything at discount grocery stores so I can't comment on the specifics.
Oh, and welcome to SW – I hope you'll enjoy your stay with us! 🌷
@helenS Aldi's private label are all as good as National Brands. try their chocolate bars, coffee, Ice cream, even their meat and chicken are good.
helenS · 36-40, F
@saragoodtimes I fully believe you – that's certainly true. 👍
Only problem is, all we have here is "Uncle Ernie's Little Shop of Everything", which is also our post office, sort of 😏
@helenS hopefully they'll open one near you soon. well worth it

I always leave my quarter in the cart when I return it. If someone hands me a cart, and refuses to take a quarter for it, I leave my quarter on the ledge for the next person.
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
There's an unspoken rule that you give your cart away at Aldi...

That dude was an ass LOL
UnholyTranquility · 36-40, M
@SwampFlower Obviously.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
Doesn't matter if it's Target or Aldi, I purposely only shop for whatever I can carry with my own two hands so I don't pick up too many impulse buys. So sometimes I look like an idiot dropping things down the aisle, I'll at least keep it under $100 😆

All the supermarkets here have those coin locks on them.. And almost everyone has a plastic token or metal gizmo to use instead of using a coin. I am fortunate enough to have 3 supermarlets in the shopping centre close by, including an Aldi and split my shopping to take advantage of the best deals from each. Only in a few cases are the Name Brands better than the Aldi alternative. And I am certainly not going to pay for a trolley..😷
Barny52 · 56-60, M
A trolley is £1 here in uk , found 2 abandoned on last shop still with money in !! Made my day
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
You pay a quarter? Its $2 here
Iwillwait · M
@Thevy29 No wonder you're down under.
NickiHijab · F
Why are people, people?
UnholyTranquility · 36-40, M
@NickiHijab I ask my self that question every day.

My son worked at a similar store to Aldi’s with ‘coin carts’

He taught me to use the key from a sardine tin to unlock the cart. (Now I don’t eat sardines so I had to buy a can just to see if it works…and it does. Insert round end.

Thank me later. :)
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
Pay it forward....surely
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Don't even know what you mean by this.

You have to pay for a cart? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Why? 🤣
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@BloviatingBuffoon I definitely didn't know what you meant by carts then...🤣

Picture putting one of those huge rolling metal (or plastic now) cages in your car... 🤣

You can't leave the store with a "hand cart" here. They have a sensor that triggers an alarm at the door.

They charge for plastic bags though. Some places the paper bags are still free.
@DeWayfarer yeah it’s the big ones , caddie (French) , chariot , or trolley. Sometimes ppl get to leave them in the parking lots instead of putting it properly to their station.

Yeah plastic bags are also paid here now. I often use my own shopping bags.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@BloviatingBuffoon as I mentioned people here just went to another store decades ago.

ima get my quarter! unless i happen to see someone who looks nice nearby that just happens to be looking for a cart. then id offer it to them for free. but if no one's around that quarter is mine lol
if given a cart always give it to another customer. if no one is available just leave it against the post so someone else doesn't have to pay
Funtoy4u · 61-69, M
There is another chain emerging here in the USA from Germany just like Aldi. It is called Lidl. You do not need a quarter for the cart at Lidl.
itsok · 31-35, F
If I get a free cart I’ll leave the quarter in for the next person. Here if you try to hand someone your cart they’ll hand you a quarter.
Don’t Aldi give tokens? I never use coins for carts. I always ask for tokens
UnholyTranquility · 36-40, M
@BloviatingBuffoon It may depend on the country or location. Ours uses quaters.
@UnholyTranquility you can use it but thankfully here you can just get a token in the information if you don’t have it and they will give it to you for free. I have many tokens on my wallet and car just in case.🤷🏻‍♀️
I always give my cart to the next person walking up. It's just what I've always done. I got that from my mom. It's what she did
1st world problems 😂
DoOverMan · 46-50, M
Keep the quarter. I've only gotten a free cart at Aldi's once. If someone offers me one, I give them my quarter.
calicuz · 51-55, M
If I don't hand it off to someone, I leave it there to pass on the blessing bestowed upon me.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
Give to the next person or leave it unlocked.
I don't need a quarter that badly.
You sure? Your must have been watching him pretty closely

Been there a few times I always leave it unlocked
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I guess he really needed a quarter
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
i believe in the concept of finders keepers
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@MartinTheFirst Do you weep often?
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
i dont understand what most of you guys are on about, you get your damn quarter back after you've returned it, youre not paying for anything 🤣 it's [big]ALWAYS[/big] free!
MethDozer · M
I always just grab a family dollar dollar cart that's in the same plaza as the aldis and use that.

That quarter a cart jazz bullshit.
