So, where should I move to?

Next year I'm selling my house, packing up and moving. I have two states I'm thinking of moving to. Washington and Pennsylvania. Well, maybe three... also thinking maybe Wisconson.

Now, for those of you living in any of those states, what cities do you recommend? Why do you recommend them? Small towns and larger cities are both being considered.

You get what you pay for. I live in one of the states that would not be listed among the 'best' for retirees. Because 'best' means 'we won't touch your SS.'

Frankly, if I'm pulling down 50K in retirement, I can afford to pay income tax on my Social Security. Honestly, I'd be okay with some of us who have plenty giving up our Social Security. Maybe I'll feel differently when my turn comes. But give me quality of living over tax savings any day.

Of the three you mention, I'd caution you on Wisconsin, if you're tired of the South. Scooter Walker is racing that state straight into Louisiana & Mississippi.
I live in PA- 6% sales tax on clothes unless recreational. Nice to the East before the Laurel mountains, Sucks between the Laurel and Blue mountains. Philly area is no better.

Portland, Oregon is the most beautiful city in the world. But...you'd have to tolerate a lot of rain.

@greenmountaingal I have though of Oregon, and you are right, Portland (travel through there a couple of times) is a beautiful city.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@frequentlyme It is also a good city in terms of culture, city services, friendly sensible people, transportation, no sales tax in Oregon. Of course, you can live right across the Columbia in Washington and be suburban to Portland.

Out of those three I'd go to Wisconsin, smaller town atmosphere when I've been there. Never lived in any of them however

How about Vancouver, Washington? It's in the state of Washington on the Columbia River suburban to Portland, Oregon.

It would depend on how much money you have, are you down sizing?
frequentlyme · 70-79, M
@nedkelly I am downsizing... huge old home to maybe a 2 bedroom is what I'm thinking. Probably selling almost everything.

Why you moving?
frequentlyme · 70-79, M
@MrBrownstone I've never liked where I currently live (Tennessee), no longer have any ties that bind, and I'm ready to get out of here.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@frequentlyme Check out cost of living in those places.
frequentlyme · 70-79, M
@MrBrownstone I have, and since the ones I picked don't tax retirement income, I'm leaning heavily towards them.

Why all the northern states?
frequentlyme · 70-79, M
@DeWayfarer I'm fed up with the southern part of the country.
