Richard Pryor still is because there was no one like him.
This was a time when Alan King, Myron Cohen, Jackie Mason and Jack E. Leonard were considered funny... (I know, eh? WHO??)

For a point of reference, google a guy who was widely considered to be the very first stand-up comedian. He was copied by no less than Bob Hope and Jack Benny - - Frank Fay.
If you want to see/hear him in action, watch something called Show of Shows (1928). He acted as the host for this musical/ comedy revue. You won't believe how corny and unfunny the whole mess was. A clip:

Incidentally, this fool was the inspiration for the loser drunk husband in the first A Star is Born.
