He may have been 'in character' when doing all that stuff but those who went to his gigs were always the same demographic.
Overweight; white; working class; and more than happy to jeer and cheer anything he said that described anybody who wasn't as them.

You can only 'play' a hateful character for so long before you either 'cancel' (to use modern terminology) yourself or you sufficiently offend the wrong people and find nobody wants to see you anymore.

He was cancelled before that was a thing. I recall Arsenio Hall bringing to light Andrew's material and Andrew felt so convicted he cried on the spot. A real eye opener. I applaud Arsenio for being brave enough to ask Andrew if he truly was a racist, but also shocked too. Most comedians support and tout the "In your face, no apologies will be given," regarding their Sets, and Arsenio broke The Comedic Code to touch on Dice's material.
