Why is there a dearth of female comedians on the circuit in England

I’m yet to hear Ellie Taylor, Mel Giedroyd, Sara Pascoe or Katherine Ryan crack a joke between them.

Kerry Godliman
Nina Conti
Sindhu Vee ~ Her schtick is 'Indian mother, so funny from a different angle
Shazia Mirza ~ Muslim woman. A different take on life
Jen Brister
Gina Yashere ~ Her material has improved massively since she moved to the States
Mae Martin. Young and still finding her direction. But good.
Josie Long.
Lou Sanders - Has written for television as well as stand-up. Intelligent.
Jo Caulfield
Kemah Bob ~ Texan woman now living in UK. Much of her stuff deals with mental health; gender identity etc. Which is different.
Jenny Eclair
Francesca Martinez ~ She has cerebral palsy so speaks slowly and describes herself as 'A bit wobbly' - Brilliant.

@Picklebobble2 And don’t forget Meera Syal, in Mrs Sindhu investigates. One of the funniest comedians around.

@SW-User I think she is the most wonderful writer.
Whether it be for novels or scripts.

If you get a chance to see Sian Davies live she is brilliant!

Female comedians are few and far between some like Catherine tate are fantastic along with Dawn French, Jennifer Saunders but mostly they are just not funny sorry but the guys win hands down on this one

@cecile Yes, would stand out in any age.

I don't find any of those people funny in the slightest tbh.

I think it is their sense of timing which is wrong. Katherine Tait is Royal Shakespeare.
The great comedy actresses of the past had this, such as Esme Carren, Joan Hixon, Patricia Hayes, and Joyce Grenville.

@SW-User Apparently, Jean Fergusson’s Hylda Baker was exceptional.

Stand up relies to a large extent upon shock impact. When women attempt to emulate the style of the most successful male comics it is often seen as eccentric.

@SunshineGirl Our best female comedians don’t seen to want to tour. Maybe family commitments?
We seem to see them in situation comedy.

@SW-User It's very hard work and I think relatively few can make a successful career of it. Many of the comics on the Comedy Store circuit seem to be combining it with a 'proper' job . . just as well, because it gives them more interesting material to draw from.

The essential truth is most of us aren’t as funny as men. Sad times.

We have other talents. 🙂

Bridge Christie is touring right now. She's fantastic.
