Have you ever gotten someone’s name really wrong…

and for some reason they never corrected you ?

When I was about 20, after college I was taking graduate classes and met an older student, a German fellow, whose name I thought was "Horse".

Strange, but okay. So I called him "Horse", and he’d smile, but he’d always answer.

So one of our classmates, also older, took me aside one day and asked,

"Why do you keep calling that man "Horse" ?

"Isn’t that his name ?" I asked.

"No ! It’s Horst !" she said.

Mortified, I asked, "Why didn’t he say anything ?"

She chuckled, "You’re a kid, he probably thought it was cute."

I thanked her for letting me know.

"No problem," she replied.
"Some of us were wondering if maybe you’d
found out something about the man we didn’t know !"

😳
Lol, oh i would of been every shade of red

Everyone always mispronounced my mothers name and my Aunts. Not any if my Uncles. They had regular ol' names. My Grandmother decided though to give the girls unique variations to normal sounding names and make them unusual

Which of course..now is pretty common practice

Lol I actually have a very similar story.

I had a math teacher in high school who repeatedly asked me what my name was every day for weeks. He never remembered. One day I was kinda tired of it & spit out a fake name when he asked me as a joke since he wasn't gonna remember anyway.

For some reason, that's the day he finally remembered 😂 but I didn't correct him because I thought it was hilarious. He called me Oscar every day for many months until one day another student asked why he kept calling me that. He swore it was my name while she argued that it wasn't & I wouldn't confirm nor deny it 😂

So he went back to his roster, started going through everything & came back to apologize & ask why I never corrected him.

Btw was that a horse cock joke at the end? 😮

Haha....

I do it on purpose ever since my daughter's started dating.

One of them is seeing a guy named Alfred ... I call him Albert

The other seeing Erik and I call him Erin....

Lmao

So.... yea ha..

@SledgeHammer Because why give them the impression they'll be around anything beyond tomorrow???

Not that I recall, right off, but I'd be sort of mortified too. I want people to correct me if I get their name wrong. 🥴

It's a cute, funny memory though, and reminds me of one related to my own first name, a German customer I was waiting on...and pate'.

Your story is an honest mistake…the dialect got in the way..I am 99% certain

I am very careful with names…
My memory isn’t as good as it once

I have a customer/friend who gets everyone's name wrong.
I totally encourage the mix up
@Ferric67 i like this. Here, 🏆. Continue with the mix up!

That's so innocent yet funny ms. Bijoux, thanks for sharing I needed a chuckle.

Your classmate may have found the reason he did not bother to correct you! 😂

I have a less embarrassing story. I once had a student whose first name and last name were each names that could be a woman's first name. It was not until the semester was over and I was entering my course grades that I realized that all semester long , I had been addressing her by her last name as if it were her first name!

Yes, I have. I have second cousins who are twins. You can't tell them apart. I'm sure their parents do, they must have found a way? Coincidentally, in the span of a year and a half both of them had children, one is last I heard pregnant now. It might be my only way to see now? I would get their names wrongs without, and soon enough I will again.

No, but my own name has been butchered in ways I find incredible.
Not revealing what my actual name is, but I've been called "Boyardee" (like the canned pasta), "Peyote" (like the hallucinogenic cactus) and many other things which aren't even good approximations of my name.

Haha yeah. It happens a lot with people from other countries, like this lady from Ethiopia. I would call her Nero. She never corrected me. Turned out her name was Meron 😅

Lol, I have an uncle named Horst! If not for my German mother and grandmother, I'd likely have made the same mistake!!
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 That would be the Wurst mistake.

@KiwiBird 🤣🤣🤣

Not quite that bad. Though I do have problems with names in songs...

1963 song "Hey, Paula" I could have sworn Paul in that song was Horus. 😱

Your friend that took you aside sounded like a handful!

Welp, they say you can lead a Horst to water...
Ah no!

I've had the weirdest mispronounciations of my name, and also done it back.
