My husband doesn't want me to because we used to get into trouble together when we were young.

She lives in Florida now. I'm all the way in New Jersey. We're all grown up, and nothing would happen. Just talk.

I actually tried reconnecting with a former friend from 20 years ago. She lives a long way away now, and I thought, like you, what could go wrong by just chatting?

It didn't end well. Don't feel like going into detail for my own mental healths sake, but I feel like giving you a warning anyway.

Long story short: it took me less than 24 h to remember why I cut her out of my life in the first place.

@TheRealBarbossa I had a similar experience about 20 years ago with a friend from 20 years before then and I'm still paying for it today
Wnat could it hurt to form a friendship again. As you said. You've both grown up. Friends are important

Contact with more than a thousand miles between you can't hurt. I'd go for it. Could be an opportunity...if only for an old time sake conversation.

Do it! I bet she’ll be happy to hear from you!

this has never worked out that I have reached into the past for someone and it was a great idea

If you don't do it you'll be left wondering about it so I'd say do it
