Crock Pot sugar free "Baked Beans"

These taste a lot like baked beans from a can!

2 lb package dried pinto beans, rinsed.
1 1/2 lb smoked ham, cut into chunks about 1" x 2".
3 large onions, cut in half, and the halves cut into sixths.
1/3 cup Knorr chicken bouillon base, (powdered).
2 to 3 dried bay leaves
2 tablespoons dried powdered sage
1 Tablespoon Herbes de Provence.
8 cups water.
1 cup Splenda, (or slightly more)

Put water and powdered bouillon in the crock pot and whisk until blended. Add all the other ingredients, stir, and cook on high for 24 hours. Add up to 2 cups more water if needed.

After 24 hours, the beans and all other ingredients should be a dark brown, and look and taste VERY much like baked beans.

But probably ALOT tastier and healthier- thanks for the recipe!

Thanks for the recipe I am sure it will be good.

You could add bacon too....ummmmm bacon...

@Lowkey I think about doing that now and then. Baked beans usually contain slabs of salt pork in small amounts, so that the fat can render and then the beans soak up the fat. But there is nothing more disgusting than getting that slimy little chunk in your mouth, TBH. So while I thought of bacon, the fat would get soggy. Canadian bacon might be an option. But for now, I am using lean(ish) ham.

I'd try that

@JohnnyNoir After 24 hours, the "sauce" gets thick and brown and sweet, and you say to yourself..."Why deal with real brown sugar and molasses?"
