I've heard diesel and styrofoam work well in a pinch, maybe some cilantro for some added zing....

There was a fashion in the 1960s, at least in Britain, for insulating bedroom ceilings with polystyrene foam panels about half-an-inch thick, glued to the existing plaster.
I think this ended when everyone started to learn the effects in a fire: dense, very toxic fumes and flaming droplets of molten foam.....
