So I am really confused about the opposition in Syria? Are they several groups, varying in degrees when it comes to terrorism and extremism?

Is ISIS amongst the opposition that was fighting Asad, so would we say ISIS won now?
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
I think the main group is an offshoot of Al-Qaida, but I haven't been following the story that closely.
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
@DunningKruger Concerning.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
They're not quite ISIS but rather a coalition that's centred around an ISIS splinter that isn't as openly batshit insane.

I think what does matter is they're still Islamists, and they're backed by Turkey who certainly have designs on the region.
@BittersweetPotato Nothing has changed. Just a name change and maybe a cool new banner to wave around.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I know, most likely
@BittersweetPotato And in case anyone is wondering where his loyalties are his men are on video putting up Turkish flags all over the place. So somehow I doubt he really cares much about Syrians and especially Syrians that might share even a slight difference of opinion.

Yes there are several groups, ISIS or its remnants being one. Degrees of terrorism and viciousness vary amongst them, but they are all horrible. Of course, so was Assad.

I look on it as a necessary step towards getting an actual decent govenment for Syria, but there are a LOT of steps between here and there
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
@firefall I COMPLETELY agree with you. It is what I was saying. Getting rid of Assad was step one. Now getting rid of the Islamist rebels is step 2.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Several groups, biggest (or the coalition as whole?) being sponsored by Turkey from what I've read

@Elessar I think I prefer to blame you! You take full responsibility for this!

@BittersweetPotato Come on it's been literally 820 years, I'd rather be associated with Casanova than the Sack of Constantinople 💀

Me too. I just hope it goes ok.. i have lots Syrian friends who fled. I know they want to return to their beautiful country..
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
@Mooed78 Thank you! Syrians are now without a country and their passport has become worthless. Lets hope for the best.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@BittersweetPotato Over here at least, as far as I know, their refugee status hasn't been revoked (yet)
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
@Elessar Thats good to know. Syrians in Homs flee their homes when rebels entered. This is far from stable for them to return back.
No they were not behind the last moves. Them and Alnusra had connections in the past but the current Elgolany left them years ago and strarted becoming a modern and a more mature version of himself and he admits to being wrong in the past according to his own words on CNN. That's where he kept insisting on protecting all minorities. The full interview is on YouTube.

That's why I said that I hope that he's honest but again only time will tell. I still have hundreds of questions like you but maybe they get lucky right?
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether Ahh I really doubt the words of someone with his history. Of course he is going to say he will protect all minorities now. He is an Islamist at the end of the day. His place is the mosque, not the parliament, if they have one left.
Apparently the West, USA through Turkey, funded a pro Israel branch of Al quaida that has taken Syria. Now Israel has moved in to occupy just part Syria for now. Seems like greater Israel is expanding.
DDonde · 31-35, M
No, ISIS is not a member of the opposition and would be considered at war with them.
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
@Elessar wow! Thanks for sharing. I am so conflicted about what to feel about what happened.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@BittersweetPotato "Cautious optimism"

Which was how I felt entering the American election, and we've seen the outcome of my optimism 😬
DDonde · 31-35, M
@Elessar For sure.

ineedadrink · 51-55, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout that's about what you apparently know of the situation if you think NATO & the U.S. control this latest mob in any way.
BittersweetPotato · 31-35, F
