Is pizza italian food or is that just an american thing?

When I was looking for a whole wheat pizza recipe, I stumbled on work done by a British researcher, who traced it back to the Levant, as in Pita bread, that was brought by the Mediterranean Levant merchants (present day Israel, Lebanon, Syria), and that became pizza.

I personally prefer the Pizza Bianca varieties. And, let's just not call Deep Dish a pizza.

Italian pizza is mostly made with only olive oil and pureed tomato for sauce, oregano and sometimes basil with some garlic. Meat and cheese added was an American idea. Authentic Italian Pizza would look more like this:
