Does coffee actually help to wake someone up, or is it just a mind over matter type deal?

I heard once that coffee actually doesn't do anything to make someone more alert, and it was just one believing it did.

I think it does because when I drink coffee , let’s say at 9 pm I can only fall asleep around 2-3 am, I stay alert all night.
