To rinse or not to rinse

Do you put dishes with remnants of food still on it, or do a quick rinse with warm water?

I typically rinse most debris off first

Big chunks of food I scrape off. I don't find the trap gets very full so I think it's alright.

I totally over think this. If I have a lot of dishes, I'll rinse and select shorter cycles. If not, I'll skip rinsing and let the dishwasher run longer and do the work for me.
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
I do rinse it off before putting it in the dishwasher I don't want a bunch of Globs of food clogging up my filter line
I hardly ever use my dishwasher anymore but when I do I just scrape the food off
@swirlie Fill it up with dishes, I know how a dishwasher works 😀

@FreeSpirit1
I couldn't resist.

All I could imagine is you opening the door of your dishwasher to add another plate when 40 gallons of water came flooding out onto the floor! 🚣🏼‍♀🌊
@FreeSpirit1 I stopped using mine, too. Living alone, I have few dishes,, and it takes so long.

Rinse them. Food particles can clog the filter and that’s a hassle to clean
always rinse before putting anything in the dishwasher. don't want foul odors

I've never met someone that just puts plates in without quickly rinsing them off
skmokisses · 46-50, F
always rinse first. if you were to look inside my dishwasher before turning it on you'd swear they were washed already
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@beermeplease Same lol

When I had a dog I would put them on the floor and let the dog lick them clean, then put them in the cupboard

I over rinse everything
I also over soap too
Zonuss · 46-50, M

@Zonuss So do I. lol

There's a dishwasher soap being advertised (Dawn) which encourages dirty dishes covered with food to be put right into the dishwasher WITHOUT first being rinsed, siting the water savings as being the motivation for buying Dawn soap.

This can be done because inside the drain of a dishwasher is a miniature macerator which pulverizes small food particles which fall through a metal screen, but if food is large enough that it doesn't fall through the screen, then it ends up being trapped in the screen which then must be removed and cleaned by hand in the sink after the dishwashing cycle.

Whether one rinses the screen or rinses the dishes off before washing, it still leads to the same amount of rinse water being used for 'rinsing'!

Do you have a Dish Washer?
Here's Mine!

More than rinse... We pre-wash in the sink.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 Why? Modern dishwashers are designed to wash the lot. No rinsing required and can in fact impair detergent efficiency. Recommendations are scrape of large solid bits and thats all.

A waste of water, time and energy. Electricity/gas too if using hot water.

I don't use one...being on my own.
sarabee1995 · 26-30, FVIP
@KiwiBird My mom (and Alex's too) never believed in letting any food get into the dishwasher to be caught by the filter at that bottom. We've just kept the same habit. 🤷‍♀
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 Yes....a lot of 'old wives' tales have been superseded by technology. A lot of them are still current and valid.

The dilemma is which pile to put them into.
carpediem · 61-69, M
I line the dishes up in the drive way and run them over with my convertible.
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
Depends who's sitting at the table blocking the path.
swirlie · F
@FloorGenAdm
That justifies standing at the kitchen counter and everyone taking turns eating over the kitchen sink.
JackHoff · 46-50, M
Rinse first and no pans in the dishwasher.
...put them where?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@SomeMichGuy Sorry, dishwasher
@Coralmist Ah.

I tend to rinse because they are often not done immediately after use.
WandererTony · 56-60, M
Rinse first. Always.
