I worked for them for two years.
HumanEarth · F
They went bye bye like Woolworth, Gimbel's, Goldmenns and many others
Degbeme · 70-79, M
@HumanEarth The one I worked at was in southern Ontario Canada.

Bottom one looked like the one in our town always loved the Big Chef!
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
I do, well either it was Burger Chef or Burger Boy. One or the other around Columbus, Ohio.
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@Heartlander I like the Worthington Inn. I have not been to it in many years though. I would have to google it to see if it was still there. The entire east and west side of Columbus have become inner city Ghetto areas, moved out away from downtown for downtown development. Where this money to be made folks get moved away from those areas in the name of progress.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@WillaKissing how sad. From downtown, east to Port Columbus, Whitehall was all pretty nice and stable.A couple of big employers near the airport, I believe it was where they developed and built OV10 aircraft. Also a big electronics company. But I imagine that Columbus probably suffered much like the dozens of other Midwestern cities, big and small, as factories shuttered and the US surrendered its post war boom. Well, more than the midwestern cities. Did any part of the US escape?
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@Heartlander No. no parts of the us escaped. The only thing that keeps Whitehall afloat as an independent city is that the area that use to be aircraft factories turned into the US governments defense and supply hub. Unfortunately, Whitehall has the highest crime rate of any little city surrounded by Columbus and Reynoldsburg that boarders Whitehall to the east is following suit with turning low income and ghetto.

Used to go there as a kid growing up in NJ.

DrWatson · 70-79, M
I remember them.

But I actually do not remember whether I ever ate at one!
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Yes, I remember. Are some still open?
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@Heartlander No not that I know of.
iamBen · 61-69, M
Yeah, back in the day.
HumanEarth · F
Half of them merged with Hardie's. Hardie's tried to saved from going completely under.

Indianapolis in the 60s and then Jeff came along and it became a franchise that changed!
jackson55 · M
Yes, most of the Berger chef locations became burger king.
bowman81 · M
Yep, but not for a lot of years. How long ago did they go bust?
Bang5luts · M
Haven't heard of it
candycane · 31-35, F
I needed a big boy lol

Heartlander · 80-89, M
@candycane I remember them from ... was it Nashville? A combo restaurant and drive-in. Very good. And their parent company (Was it Shoney?) open dozens ... hundreds? ... of restaurants along the Interstate highways that had a special appeal to the retiring WW2 generation. They had a breakfast buffet for a flat fee and mornings drew huge crowds of leisure-suited retirees, including my parents :) I remember my dad insisting that they had to get an early start so they could make it to Shoney's before the breakfast buffet ended.

@Heartlander @candycane

I bought this Big Boy Doll at a Big Boys in Danville Illinois back in 2012

(Not the old camera, I just used that as a stand for the photograph)
I think they were more upper east coast.
