Speaking truth to power

My daughter has recently started a vocational health and nutrition course at school. Through a work contact I managed to arrange for the marketing director of a well known restaurant brand (that happens to be HQd in our city) to give a talk to the students about the hospitality sector.

One small problem . . daughter has a visceral dislike of said brand. When I asked her why, she said it was because that restaurant's takeaway packaging was always littering the garden of the care home where she used to live.

Ok . . well perhaps we can collect some evidence that there is a littering problem associated with the company and ask him about his company's environmental policies. Which we duly did 🙂 And then we got hold of a 2022 menu and used it to show how portions have got smaller and prices have risen over the past two years . . because as everyone knows, maths is fun! 😁

On Tuesday I met the director and took him to the school. He gave a presentation, did some practical exercises with the students, and then tried to make a quick exit after distributing bits of merchandise.

But he hadn't reckoned on my daughter who was just getting started on her sustained examination of corporate ethics. If he hadn't previously been aware of a littering problem associated with the H*****y Road branch, he surely is now 😊 And then she went on to the question of portion control, wielding the spreadsheet we had built together like a magic amulet.

The director was by now looking decidedly peaky and clearly regretting his decision to volunteer for community outreach. He vaguely promised to look into matters and "get back to you", but my daughter was having none of it. Made him promise to respond within a week and got him to give her his personal email and phone number before she would let him leave 😅

And this is the girl who when we first met her six years ago was too shy even to speak to an adult she didn't know 🤗
You have raised a warrior. A young lady who is conscious of the truth and what to do to do good. I think you should be proud of yourself and of her. Well raised. And the fact that she demanded and got a deadline with answers? That is remarkable.

@PoetryNEmotion Thank you 🙂 You're appearing as ticked, so I think I must already have added you in the past 💖
@SunshineGirl I rarely friend here. You should be in my tribe. So now you are. Thank you.

That's brilliant! I hope he follows through. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with and how your daughter reacts to it. Looks like you've done a good job with her. I think she will have a bright future.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@ninalanyon I think he will . . I can tell him from long experience that resistance is futile 😊

Awwww! 💖💖💖 Bless her heart she's a star! 💫💫💫 I don't like littering either! 😕😕😕 Though I'm not as brave as your special sweetheart! 🤪🤪🤪 I had fun reading this post as I LOVE kids and that includes teenagers too! 😁😁😁

I hope you will tell her how proud we are of her.
72andy · 51-55, M
@SunshineGirl if demands get high. Portions get smaller and more expensive.
😂
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@72andy Practical economics for teenagers.

@SunshineGirl In our home my precious kids get ten dollars a week for doing chores as I prefer to only spoil them on Christmas and birthday's cause if you only get lots of presents on those two occasions then they are more special! 🤗🤗🤗 I absolutely LOVE buying Christmas presents so I admit my kids get spoiled at Christmas and birthday's but otherwise they are stuck with ten dollars a week! 😇😇😇 We may put our Christmas decorations up this weekend! 🎅🎅🎅

If only journalists had this much courage.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Burnley123 This is probably similar to the complete freedom that a journalist enjoys only at the start and end of her career.
