in french we call them chocolatine, they are the same dough as croissant but not in a croissant shape because you're right, croissant means moon-shaped, its not a croissant if its not in the shape of a moon.

Most of the things I see sold as croissant aren't. I've made croissant; it takes a lot of skill and patience.
