Foods that have a diuretic effect might be helpful. Beets, beet juice, lemon or lime juice, watermelon, dandelion etc. There is a good article about natural diuretics on the Healthline website.
coconut water is very high in potassium. beets are good for blood pressure. they sell beet chews at the vitamin shoppe that help too if he doesnt like cooked beets
That he drank tomato sauce is hilarious… the high blood pressure part is not (and the fact that like you said, the tomato sauce probably didn’t help matters with its sodium content)
@WaryWitchWandering It wasn't the only crazy thing he's done this week and it's only Tuesday. I went up to their place yesterday and before I got there he had been patching the bathroom ceiling and had mixed an oil based paint with a water based sheet rock mud. I'm still not sure at what point he realized it. I asked him about it when he called this morning but he doesn't hear very well and missed that part of the question. My sister called him before I could repeat the question so he had to go.
Well i was Diagnosed stage 3 CKD ..told within a couple months i was to be put on transplant list... I also was listed as a Pre-diabetic.. ( both 5 years ago )
I since Lost 114 lbs My kidney function Fully in normal range As is Now my Blood sugars
@TheDisciplinarian That’s very inspiring. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2016. I took classes suggested by my doctor, joined a support group and lost 60 lbs. One of the many books I bought (because I like to cook) was the one below. I continue to refer to it in making old recipes diabetic-friendly. I began with an A1C of 11.7; it’s been between 6.5-6.6 the last few tests.
I always heard that a low sodium diet and eating beets, bananas, and broccoli help. But I'm not expert.
But perhaps getting something that can measure his blood pressure throughout the day may be helpful because then he can figure out what he needs.and what affects his blood pressure. If your dad already wears a watch, maybe a Fitbit or something isn't that big of a change.
@Scribbles Low-sugar diet helps too. Sugar is crystalline and causes swelling if it’s eaten a lot in foods. They always pick on salt though. Also avoid MSG because it’s sodium but doesn’t have any nutrition unlike Himalayan sea salt.
@Scribbles This may sound odd, but what affected him Monday was the cold air. His lungs are scarred from working in the cotton mill when he was in his teens. Monday he apparently was feeling ok and doing some work in the house, he then went outside thinking he wouldn't be out very long (and it really wasn't that cold) . Momma heard something and looked out the door to find him trying to crawl back up the steps. I must have got there shortly after she got him back in, he was sitting at the table with his blood pressure cuff still on his arm. He must have took something before I got there and after a little while he checked it again and it was getting better. Yesterday he seemed back to normal and had taken mom to town after lunch to buy groceries.
@robb65 Yoi should get him in to a doctors office as he may need to be on meds to regulate his pressure as the varried fluctuation could idicate heart issues
@WolfGirlwh0r3 He has meds for high bp but keeping it regulated is a problem. It will probably level out some once the weather gets warm and he can get outside and mess around with his tractors. He has an appointment with a specialist one day this week. He had heart surgery 30 something years ago now so it's something he's been dealing with for a long time.
