Foods that help with high blood pressure.

My parents came by this afternoon. My dad can't keep his blood pressure regulated and had had a bad spell yesterday. He asked my mom to get online and look for foods that might help. She had already done this a while back and learned that tomato juice is supposed to help but he wouldn't drink it, but now he's ready to try again. So last night before bed he went to the fridge and got him a glass, then went to bed and told mom he "didn't know how she could drink that stuff as thick as it was". Apparently he told her he had to add hot water to get it thin enough to drink so she went to see what had happened to the juice. He had picked up the spaghetti sauce by mistake.

I always heard that a low sodium diet and eating beets, bananas, and broccoli help. But I'm not expert.

But perhaps getting something that can measure his blood pressure throughout the day may be helpful because then he can figure out what he needs.and what affects his blood pressure. If your dad already wears a watch, maybe a Fitbit or something isn't that big of a change.

@Scribbles Low-sugar diet helps too. Sugar is crystalline and causes swelling if it’s eaten a lot in foods. They always pick on salt though. Also avoid MSG because it’s sodium but doesn’t have any nutrition unlike Himalayan sea salt.

@Scribbles This may sound odd, but what affected him Monday was the cold air. His lungs are scarred from working in the cotton mill when he was in his teens. Monday he apparently was feeling ok and doing some work in the house, he then went outside thinking he wouldn't be out very long (and it really wasn't that cold) . Momma heard something and looked out the door to find him trying to crawl back up the steps. I must have got there shortly after she got him back in, he was sitting at the table with his blood pressure cuff still on his arm. He must have took something before I got there and after a little while he checked it again and it was getting better. Yesterday he seemed back to normal and had taken mom to town after lunch to buy groceries.
