Exactly what are "house wines"?

Restaurants that serve wines often sell "house wines"-wines that tend to be cheaper than name-brands and that are advertised as being directly linked with the restaurant itself. But are they?Does the establishment have a hand in making them,or are they just wines from outside wineries that they just put their name on?

Restaurants make deals with producers and/or distributors of wine for their "House Wines"
That is all....
Dependent upon the level of Establishment Quality, "House Wines" can be of wide variety of appeal and uniqueness.

It is not uncommon for Great restaurants to have a wonderful selection of house wines that aren't some mass-produced swill

Knew about the practice of 'house wines' but not to this level of detail. So I figure this relationship with producers and distributors gives restaurants the opportunity to showcase these wines? Thank you, did not know that.
