Why have I not blocked you yet?
Nimbus · M
@nedkelly You don't like being reminded of your heritage? 😆
4meAndyou · F
I have enjoyed looking all of them up. Of course the Huff paste is technically not a pie, but a pie crust that is only made to protect more tender fillings, and is so tough and nasty it must be discarded and is not eaten...and at least 6 of these pies are potato and veg pies...variations of one another.

I remember my grandfather asking me to make him a "poor man's lemon pie", also known as a vinegar pie...and apparently it was very nasty...🤣. Not all of the old recipes deserve to be saved...😉
Nimbus · M
@4meAndyou Just looked up 'Vinegar Pie' .
Sounds delicious :)
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@4meAndyou That is true. I remember funeral pie.
RubySoo · 56-60, F

I would add mutton pie, braised slowly the mutton or of course cook in scotch broth then chop the meat add gravy and bake in a pie. I do quite like some added brussel sprouts or any winter veg. Turnip being a favourite.

Anyways I just stopped by here eating organic grapefruit.
davidlewis · M
@davidlewis

A big round piece of dough (slap) possible meaning - slapped on the table to flatten This would be the base)
The top spread with steak cut small with chopped onions. Syne Then the bottom half lifted and laid over laid over the top. Scolpit the edges crimped between finger and thumb.
two holes pierced in the top. -- Onion bridies always had two holes and without onions just one hole. This lets moisture out. Retaining a crispy pastry. I would think this refers to a plain pastry and not flaky. But bridies can be both.

The bridie as was - easy carried in a lunch box say. Of course in Scotland a piece box. Although piece would mean a sandwich but also a snack carried to work.
Nimbus · M
@davidlewis Sounds good to me, I'd give it a try :)
davidlewis · M
@Nimbus

Bridies and Pies are very popular here in Scotland. But now the quality can be low and imported meat used. Back in the Day one bakery was so busy they employed thier own butchers and actually had an agent to buy cattle at the market -
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Gee, you could put anything in a pie pastry and you guys would eat it, no questions asked.
Nimbus · M
@Thevy29 Good point :)
Jamesy · 41-45, M
And the famous pie and peas suppers in Church Halls
Nimbus · M
@Jamesy Is that London way?

Sazzio · 31-35, M
No cream pie??

I guess Brits need SOME sort of proper cooked good food.
Nimbus · M
@Sazzio I'm sure there is a more comprehensive list somewhere :)
I see no pecan pie on that list.
They lose.
Nimbus · M
@TheSentinel Noted for addition to list ;)
davidlewis · M
And of course The Okie but would need to check spelling if I can????

The Okie was a bridie But one corner was filled with a sweet treat like jam and custard.
This meant a main course and pudding in one pastry case. It was a common meal on Royal Navy Ships and perhaps also Merchant ships. if the cooks were busy short of supplies. There ya go an entry for the O section.
Wol62 · 51-55, M
I got hungry just reading that!
Nimbus · M
@Wol62 Enjoy! :)
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
And yet you don’t have Pecan Pie, Peach Pie, Blueberry Pie, Coconut Cream Pie, Lemon Meringue Pie, Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Cream Pie, Banana Pie, Boston Cream Pie, or Whoopie Pies on that list. No pie list is complete without those.
Nimbus · M
@cherokeepatti Noted and added to the list :)

You forgot Cottleston Pie!

Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie,
A fly can’t bird, but a bird can fly.
Ask me a riddle and I reply:
“Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie.”

Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie,
A fish can’t whistle and neither can I.
Ask me a riddle and I reply:
“Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie.”

Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie,
Why does a chicken, I don’t know why.
Ask me a riddle and I reply:
“Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie.”

Probably when Aryabhata was occupied with Pi, those natives added another dimension to it and kept multiplying speedily. I can just imagine.
