Important question about Mash 🥔

I’m at my grandma’s for dinner and she’s making bangers & mash. I just noticed she leaves the skin on the potatoes.

Normal UK thing? 😂

I can’t say I’ve had them that way before. She says they are more rustic, so we’ll see what that means exactly 😳😳😳😂😂😂

Update… it was delicious 😋
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
The skin is where all the nutrients are. The rest is just starch.

Delicious, wonderful starch....

I’ve had them here fixed that way. Especially good with new red potatoes, the smaller ones.

I would say the dish is "crushed potatoes" with the skin on. Sounds like a lovely dish nonetheless - if rather unsuited to today's weather!
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@ArtieKat When I do them I delegate the mashing to my sons, I insist that it is mashed, not crushed.
ArtieKat · M
@ninalanyon Skin on or off?
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@ArtieKat Skin on, to keep all the nutrients, and because it's less work.

Not very common, but I love it. Retains more nutrients, adds texture and flavour, and easier to prepare 😊 But then again I'm the sort of girl who eats the whole apple . . skin, pips, core, and all 😆
Raffiki · 22-25, F
@SunshineGirl Eating the apple core is hardcore 😂
ineedadrink · 51-55, M
I usually leave the skins on, mostly cause I'm lazy. And they add nice flavor.
Not that common but it happens.
And Bangers and Mash is great...hope there were onions
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
Sometimes I leave skin on (specially red skin potatoes)
I leave the skins on the potatoes when i make mash spuds .
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
It's quite commonly done now but when I was growing up we always peeled the potatoes. I don't think it is especially common to leave the skins on even now. As @DunningKruger says the skin contains nutrients and is best left on.

It’s just posh mash
Good if you like your mash with more texture. Awful if you like it smooth

My parents leave the skins on. Says it's more rustic and the skins are good for you

I like to have the skin on my cooked potatoes too.
scrub them good and leaving the skin on is super
zerofuks2give · 41-45, M
It’s good that way
Thespis · M
I've had them this way, though I'd prefer peeled.. Unless red potatoes, or gold potatoes or used, then skin on.
Sarahsummersrockz · 18-21, F
No! Leaving the skin on spuds for mashing is weird!
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Sarahsummersrockz No it isn't! It's much less effort and better for you.
I like it like that.
SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
I leave them on but when I was over there my roomate freaked out like I've never consumed a potato in my life before
