I recently opened an account with TDAmeritrade for $1,000. That bought me, like, five shares of an index fund.

It depends on what you want to buy - generally you have to buy at least one share - if they are $20 then you would need to spend $20. Depending on who you use to buy the shares there will probably be a purchasing charge too.
