Honest Question to Pro-Wrestling fans: WHY?

I am not trying to put anyone down; I'm just trying to understand. My co-worker always has various matches on.
I can appreciate:
The obvious athleticism required to pull off even a fraction of the jumps and lands, etc. Respect, big time. Big time.
The beautiful women, who are also in amazing shape.
The amount of planning and pyro that goes into entrances. Heck, the whole production.
And Seth Freakin' Rollins.

The rest leaves me scratching my head. Telegraphed punches that end a clear mile away from the intended target. More folding chairs thrown than Bobby Knight. I'm not seeing the real meat of the performance. Obviously, people dig it big time, so what am I missing?

WWE is a joke now. I have some posts a out it. Just posted this:

https://similarworlds.com/fighting-martial-arts/wrestling/4359923-When-WWE-was-worth-watching-I-enjoy-watching

2004 WWE died after WrestleMania XX.

I shifted my focus to UFC after 2004 because I was done over-scripted and hilariously choreographed matches.🙂

@SoLeRiMix I actually was working in pay-per-view for the first UFC. It was almost 30 years ago, but I remember that the first match on the card was a Gracie fight. He kicked the guy's teeth out in like 30 seconds and they did NOT have the next match ready, so the hosts had to vamp and fill for like a half hour. It was poorly produced, but boy has it thrived!
SoLeRiMix · 31-35, M
@TheRascallyOne Yup! It is better than WWE but they also invest more in talent that is becoming older.

I really want the good old ECW days to come back when action looked real though it was all kayfabe.

You don't get to see I-Quit, No Holds Barred, Hardcore, Falls Count Anywhere and my favourite Luchador action anymore.

MMA is no joke. Blood is real, action is real and matches aren't kayfabe.🙂

Real action is certainly better than Reel action.🙂
Lmao... you're taking it too seriously!!! It's scripted 7 ways sideways and is like confusing Coronation Street with real life.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@HootyTheNightOwl I get that, but I'm trying to see what other people get from it. Again, not putting it down.
@uncalled4 Adrenaline rush, I think... everyone loves when "their guy" wins.
Slade · 56-60, M
@HootyTheNightOwl I watched in the 80's and always cheered for the villians
thatscottishguy · 26-30, M
You might enjoy it more watching AEW. WWE dont't know how to tell a story anymore and at the same time don't let wrestlers go to their full potential.
Chickie · F
@thatscottishguy AEW is hilarious! I like Darby.
GeorgeTBH · 31-35, M
Its pretty much like watching a play
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@GeorgeTBH Ah. OK. That gets a little closer.
GeorgeTBH · 31-35, M
@uncalled4 ya the best way to put it it's pretty much just like watching a play it's all scripted out as a play would be moves and everything
TheRascallyOne · 31-35, M
@Chickie Yeah they were all really good in their own right but nobody has ever sold more shirts than Stone cold Steve Austin in the year's of when he was wrestling
Chickie · F
@TheRascallyOne I forgot about Stone Cold. I remember Kane and The Undertaker.
TheRascallyOne · 31-35, M
@Chickie yeah they were awesome
Dainbramadge · 56-60, M
I see two other people comment with the same angle I am going to. AM GOING TO!!! LOL
It's a play fight with some very real acrobatics.
I myself can't stand to watch it but I will stay up til the we hours of the morning watching Kung-Fu theater. Those movies have the worst " You killed my master" story lines and punching sound effects like someone hitting a vinyl sofa with a wiffel ball bat. But damn I love 'em.
I guess same goes for wrestling.
Pfuzylogic · M
I would need to refer to Dick the Bruiser and The Crusher before a match against the Blackjack Lanza and Mulligan With Manager Bobby Heenan during the early 70s. Heenan would absolutely fly across the ring to get away from the Briiser and Crusher. My mom connected to all of it since she watched Gorgeous George in the 50s.

I’ve been a fan for 23 years it’s not for everyone and someone is always gonna have something to say about it and that’s fine anyone can have their own opinions on it
DCarey · 46-50, M
Wrestling in the 80s and 90s was great. Now, like everything else, it blows.
Slade · 56-60, M
@DCarey I loved it when Rowdy Roddy Piper was a heel. He was such a funny motor mouth. He said to Mr T "you wear more chains than your ancestors"
DCarey · 46-50, M
@Slade I know. Wrestlers back then were entertainers. People watched as much for what they said on the mic as much as the actual matches, Nobody today has any mic skills and they are too athletic. I'd much rather see a bunch of badasses brawling.
Slade · 56-60, M
@DCarey Yep like the Funk Bros who'd put nooses on their opponents
FurryFace · 61-69, M
its entertainment , back a few years it was way more entertaining , now its a bunch of yakking
Scarfface · 46-50, M
I used to like watching wrestling until I realised it was fake, I think I was around 10 years old.
Slade · 56-60, M
It's a soap opera for men
Chickie · F
I was never into wrestling until one day when I was over a friend of mines house and I saw two guys in the back trying to beat the shit out of each other before they made their entrances, it made me laughed my ass off then one of them bit the other in the face. It's funny at least AEW/AWE is.
When you watch movies, do you complain that they're scripted?

Also, staged or not, it takes real athletic ability. You try taking a "fake" fall from the top of a steel cage into a pickup truck bed without breaking your neck.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@LordShadowfire It definitely does take major ability. I don't complain when I see a work of fiction, no. Reality shows definitely play with the "reality" concept, though.
@uncalled4 True.
@uncalled4 Obviously it’s a target for those that have disposable income. Sort of like the Barnum effect with fortune telling. Wrestling targets children and teens social life. They pester their parents to use the credit cards. And it’s on going. Back in the day it was Saturday morning cartoons that pushed the product.

Astrology targets adults in the same way. But the adults don’t pay astrologers to make predictions their children. It’s not important. Also children have zero interest.
