I must have been around 11 or 12 when we had a chat with my mom about the appropriate dress code for each occasion. At home, I was free to wear about anything I wanted.
Going out with friends, I was also relatively free but my mom made sure that I was always properly dressed for the occasion and not too much skin showing by fear that I would be catcalled.
I always appreciated the tips and suggestions my mom gave me and she realized that she could trust me with my way of dressing when I approached her to ask for advice.
I have a great mom (and a great dad as well). They gave me more freedom than I expected and I always made sure that I did not disappoint them.

My mother never laid out my clothes within my memory. I remember having to dress myself. At age 11 she was buying me absolutely horrible clothes, which made me miserable to wear, and at age 13 I requested that I pick out my own clothing on our shopping trips. At age 16 she began to drop me off at Jordan Marsh with her charge card and I could shop for myself.

I don’t think that’s something my mom ever consistently did
Colonelmustardseed · 36-40
Probably when I was 7 or 8. My mom didn’t have much time for things like that, especially with multiple kids. I think it’s a sweet act of care that your mom is doing for you. Small things that show a person takes just a little extra time for someone they love.

After the age of 5 or 6, I pretty much chose what I wanted to wear...from the choices I had. If my mom had some objection to I wanted to wear, however, I rarely ended up wearing it. Not until I was 12 or 13, anyway.

When i went to kindergarten, my sister was in fifth grade. My mother hated rising early, so my sister was tasked with waking me and getting me out the door. I was dressing myself then i know.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Uff, I don't remember. I was definitely picking my own clothes at 11 though. That's when I kind of started to care a bit more.

Can I ask how old are you now?and do you get embarrassed by her picking out your outfit

When I was old enough to dress my myself
Richard65 · M
That's not healthy, in my opinion. It's infantilising as you're old enough to choose your own clothing for the day. There's lots of things moms still love doing for their older children, but choosing and laying out your clothes shouldn't be one of them.

When i left school and went to work. I had work ware provided by the company but when i got home the rules was still in place. Get changed and put the work stuff away and put my everyday outfit on
No idea. I just wanted to dress like my older sister

My parents divorced when I was 12 (1980), and I was pretty much my own person despite living with my mum (rip) until my late 20's when I moved in with my first partner (ex since 2011), esp after my younger sister left home at 18 and I became just me and mum. Never really ever had clothing choices made for me once I had jobs (from my early teens doing casual stuff).
As a guy, I don't find clothing and fashion a 'thing' I need to really care about though. Clothes are purely functional for me when i choose (or need) to wear them.

You are a good person, zonavar! You did exactly what you were suppose to do at that time in your life. The reason I know that is because if you weren't suppose to be looking after things, you wouldn't be able to even if you tried. That's how I know that you were following the path that you were suppose to be on and you still are!

I met up with her at the shopping mall yesterday and she insisted on picking out a jacket for me...

How old are you DianneV ? Do you always wear what your mom puts out for you to wear?
She always let me, for as long as I can remember, at least.
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
I'll let you know if that day ever comes... And no, I don't live at home.

I never doubted that

2 years ago when she died.
She might not have laid my clothes out every morning, but every item of clothing I owned came from her.
Now she's gone, I have SW to call my emerging sense of style "old fashioned".

Perhaps it’s a matter of her her just Wanting you to wear something Conservative to her approval. I would have a special friend nearby that you could keep some different clothes that are perhaps more revealing.
RedBaron · M
Why don’t you just start doing it yourself. Your mother will quickly take the hint.
And when have men ever chosen clothes for women to wear?

I was definitely choosing my own clothes to wear when I was about 8 or 9....it might have even been younger than that.

I ruined the outfits by playing in them and getting them stained so what I wore had to be functional.
Allelse · 36-40, M
Pretty young, my mum and dad were very neglectful so I had to get my own clothes ready at a young age. 7 or 8 maybe.

How old are you? My Mom never really did that
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Jenny1234 she never chose my outfits. Only once in a while she made my sister and I wear the same dress to a family reunion and I didn’t want too and I said no. I was 8 years old and I really didn’t want to match my 5 year old sister.
She ended up pushing me to the floor and kicking me and hitting me with a wooden spoon. I ended up wearing it after all.

iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Jenny1234 lots of stuff like that happened when I was a kid. Thank you 🩷
SandWitch · 26-30, F
Funny you should ask that because my mom just told me recently that maybe by next year, I'd be able to dress myself without her choosing for me. I'm so excited!
Strictmichael75 · 61-69, M
@SandWitch is there s reason?
