@Nursegirl my boy's are 7 and soon to be 10. Sure talk away 😊
Nursegirl · 51-55, F
@Cigarguy Ok so here's how it works. You have a "Pack" that's the larger group of all ages. Then you have "Den"s which are the age groups broken down. A 7 and 10 year old will most likely be in different Dens, unless you have a super tiny Pack. So the whole Pack usually meet together, then break-out into Dens. The Den's work on advancements and achievements together, which is why they separate the age groups.
They typically have a bigger Pack event, maybe once a month. Like a campout. All Dens attend together, and Cubs need an adult to attend events like this with them. Adults don't have to attend weekly Den meetings, but it sure is helpful (and FUN!)
If they advance to Scouts after fifth grade, they can attend meetings and campouts without an adult partner.
And, yes, they have allowed girls into what used to be called "Boy Scouts" (including Cubs) but at the Pack level they have to have a female leader in order to allow girls.
Hope this helps.
PS. I sincerely hope you have an active Scouting community where you live. Where we live is very active in Scouting and it really made it exciting with the events they could plan.

@Nursegirl thank you for the wonderful information

tiltawhirl · 36-40, F
Yes!!! Do it and have them stick with it. But do keep an eye on them at camp and go with them when they are little and teach them about predators including other children because actually because I know a boy that something happened to him at camp. My son is in Boyscouts but he’s older and he’s had nothing but positive experiences and he’s almost Eagle Scout!
Confined · 56-60, M
My oldest brother was an eagle scout.
I did it for a few years becase my dad was a scout leader. Went to where they filmed Frifay the 13th. I did not want to continue onto boy scouts like my brothers did. But learned a few things about always be prepared.
Did 2 adult campouts I did well.
Best thing they can learn, emergency preparedness. First aid. Plan ahead.

@Confined yeah I'm just looking for something they can both do together, since they volleyball league ended. I I think this will be challenging enough for our youngest boy but easy enough that our oldest boy can take part in almost everything

I was a den mother when my son was 7 years old! It was SO much fun! I took them for a little hike a short way into the woods, on a "nature" scavenger hunt...and we made our own bows and arrows out of dowels wrapped with string in the middle. I let the boys shoot at a paper bag out in a meadow behind my house.

We worked toward badges, and it was just a LOT of fun.
Cigarguy · M
@4meAndyou yeah this sounds like something they will both enjoy and can do together.
Levenrack · 46-50, M
That would be nice for them I think. I was in Cubs, but never transitioned to Boy Scouts. Now it's referred to as Scouts BSA, to make it more inclusive for the girls.

@SunshineGirl thanks 😊
Levenrack · 46-50, M
@Cigarguy Yikes, I'm so sorry about that. I literally did not think, before I typed. And I invited that stuff into your post. Levenrack have so so much bad feeling....

Cigarguy · M
@Levenrack all is forgiven my friend
BillyMack · 46-50, M
They should have a good time. It’s a lot of parent help early on but more independence as they get older.
Cigarguy · M
@BillyMack my partner is really excited about helping out. I would love to but I don't think they would want me there working with the kids
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
My boys loved Cubs!
Cigarguy · M
@Jenny1234 talked to them last night and they want to do it.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
If your free too. Cub Scouts always need an extra adult helper.
Cigarguy · M
@Thevy29 I would love too but I don't think they'd want me as a volunteer but I think my partner would really enjoy that.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
A well run cub or scout troop is great fun ☺
Cigarguy · M
@SunshineGirl yeah I want to find something for them to replace volleyball and this seems like a good fit
I think that would be great
Cigarguy · M
@Shybutwilling2bfriends yeah I think they will both enjoy it
Boys scouts got alota heat idk why i just remember that my friend was an eagle scout and all sad
Cigarguy · M
@TryingtoLava I don't really pay attention to that sure so I wouldn't know to much
4meAndyou · F
ALL tiger cubs are seven years old! So is Tiny Tornado!
Cigarguy · M
@4meAndyou cub scouts in are area is k-5.
4meAndyou · F
@Cigarguy It is likely that all the applicants will be grouped by age, so that all of them have a group of similar age kids with whom to interact.

Dens might be small. I only had 4 boys in my den.
Cigarguy · M
@4meAndyou yeah I am a little worried they won't be in the same group. I guess it wouldn't be horrible if they weren't
