How about trying to reward good behaviour instead of punishing the bad, I find it more effective most of the time.

Punishment isn't really an efficient means to solicit proper behavior, according to child psychology. Which you could study up on, had you the inclination. Rather, treating kids as they are--little humans--incentivizing them could work better. Rewarding good behavior, rather than punishing bad behavior.

But, end of the day. Like I said, kids are just tiny humans. So, think about how someone could get you to do something or not do something. Forcing humans to do things doesn't work very well. They tend to rebel against it, or crush under the pressure. And punishment usually just results in resentment of the one doing the punishing, leading to more rebellion.

Though. I've only read one psychology textbook, so I'm not exactly qualified. Just my opinion really

Perhaps negative reinforcement isn't the answer.

Listen to them, tell them you love them, set them clear rules and explain to them why the rules are important. If they break the rules, tell them that the next time, they will be spanked. If there is a next time, spank them, hard.
