My brother lost his job

My mom has been in and out of the hospital with liver failure, and she has had to be moved from the ICU to an assisted living facility. With all of the appointments and the moving her around, my brother has used up all of his vacation and sick days (in the US you aren't given very many to start with). He went to his boss and asked about possibly getting the paperwork for FMLA, but they turned him down then ultimately let him go.

I hate that tiny red state town he's stuck in. I keep trying to get him to move here but now I don't know if it's possible. Just more stress. Also he said mom has a death rattle and hospice has been called in. At least now he has all the time in the world to spend with her while he collects his unemployment. 😔

I am so sorry to hear this about your family. I know you must be very upset. Hospice was a true blessing for us when my mom was that sick. They really are awesome during times like this.
I didn't know an employer could deny fmla. My roommate got it to help me out when I was sick. I can't belive caring for one's mother wouldn't qualify.

@SooperSarah small towns seem to get away with whatever they want

It's so sad to learn that they treat an employee , a person in distress, without a little consideration.
Leave without pay may be understandable, but termination is downright unethical, even if it's there in the fine print of rules.

My heartfelt sympathy for your family and especially for him. May he find some other engagement, and soon.

Oh this is horrible. I feel for you and your brother! I went through this with my mom last year. The appointments and treatments and care is all a full time job. Asking about fmla at work turned out to be a bad idea for me too, though I ended up not having to take it. what a horrible stressful time that was.

Tell him to go to the labor board of his state and explain the situation to them. They could get a lot of trouble for not giving him the paperwork for the family medical leave act

I wonder if this is something that can be taken to court?

As it says =

Matthew 5:38 (TLB)
“The law of Moses says, ‘If a man gouges out another’s eye, he must pay with his own eye. If a tooth gets knocked out, knock out the tooth of the one who did it.’

Are you sure they were allowed to do that? His employer to turn him down
Banksy83 · 41-45, M
Can you not go look after her?
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@Banksy83 I have no way to. I'm in AZ and she's in TN. I have no money to allow a flight and an extended stay.

So, why are you not down there helping him out with your mother?
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@swirlie she left me to raise him when I was 10 yrs old. She didn't reappear into our lives til I was 18, and that was because I moved out and she HAD to legally take care of my brother. They have a different relationship with each other than the one I have with her.
