When did you first become aware of your parents' mortality?

I lost my mom the first of may. She was 91.
As far as their mortality, I lost my dad when I was almost 10. I knew then that life is fragile and can change in one moment.
You will never be prepared.

My dad died when I was 5 so I’ve been acutely aware for most of my life.

So sorry to hear about your dad. I hope he has a quick and easy recovery!

I was young when I realized it. Probably 4 or 5. I'd lay in my parents' bed and feel very sad thinking about it. They were older parents. My mother passed away a few years ago, but my dad is still around. I get very anxious thinking of him passing away, and with this virus I've been especially on edge :(

I think I did realize when I was very young, that they could and would die. I was 30 or 31, when both of them had potentially deadly diagnoses. They were in their late 50's. It was like my world turned upside down.

End of primary school beginning of secondary school my parents have raised me to reconize that we are mortal. And have discussed death a fair bit.

I know what you mean. I can't fathom that day. I hope your dad will be okay. But, this is life. Sometimes I just stop and think how I can do this life :(

It still hasn’t happened yet. My dad is 40 and my mom is 41. They are only middle aged 🤔

I said goodbye to my dad last summer. His health had declined considerably, and had one close call before that. I suppose I had been expecting it, so the impact was still great, but nowhere near the atom bomb I had imagined it might be. It's funny how life goes on.

I’m sorry about your fathers health. My birth mother passed away just a month after I was born. Once I was old enough to grasp that her death meant she was gone forever I developed a lot of anxiety over my fathers life. I would make him salads or coffee and have him sit when he came home because I thought somehow that would keep him around. Then when I stopped to doing that my dad would be vocal how he didn’t expect to live a long life. He’ll be 60 this fall and his dad died shortly after he was 60 and my great grandfather younger than him. It’s heart wrenching to realize the reality of how we will be the ones to carry out their final wishes, deal with their remains, belongings etc That one day I won’t be able to go for a walk & chat with my dad is something I try not to think about. All we can do is spend this valuable time together. We can’t stop time or death we can just value them now & make our time together count for something. Make as many memories as we can. Get to know them better than we maybe do. I hope your dad gets better and you two have the chance for more together.
