Would you ask a total stranger to adopt your young daughter?

Years ago I friended a woman from Nigeria on Facebook who was in one of my groups. We only chatted a couple of times over the years.
Well she texted me today out of the blue and asked me if I would adopt her daughter!
I thought at first that she was joking because maybe the girl was being bad and Mom was jokingly saying she was going to put her up for adoption.
But she was serious! She explained that Nigeria was a bad country to live in and she wanted a better life for her daughter. So she was I guess randomly asking people on her friends list who lived in America to adopt her daughter to give her a better life!
I explained to her that America is not that great to live in- high crime rates, huge taxes, expensive, crooked government and bad healthcare system, etc. And that I didn't have the money or room in my home for a child.
All she said was that it had to be better than Nigeria.
Could you give up your daughter under those circumstances to a total stranger online?

My first reaction is to wonder whether this "woman" from Nigeria is a scammer. (Nigeria does have that reputation.)

But, to get at your question, I think it is difficult for us who live in relative security to understand how desperate a person can feel living in a country like Nigeria. I can imagine how someone would get to that point, of wanting something better for her daughter, knowing that she herself could never give it to her.

@DrWatson it must be a horrible situation to be in if she is legit

@Mardrae And the horrible situation is one of the reasons there are so many scammers there. There is almost no other way to earn an income! I once heard a report on NPR that said that internet scams had become the third largest sector of the Nigerian economy. (This was many years ago). The largest sector was government, and I forget what the second was.

My dad was adopted similar to this way. A married wealthy family who couldn't have children of their own secretly adopted my dad since grandma wasn't married and couldn't keep him.

US is paradise compared to Nigiera where daughters are sold daily to get food on the table.

However with all the scams going on I'd need proof before I trust that a online stranger is genuine about adopting their daughter.

@Queendragonfly I think that was my problem with the whole request. The fact that she didn't know me at all.

I’m sure you probably only have to send them money so they could do the proper paperwork, and pay their lawyers, and then bribe someone at whatever agency and then airfare….
Mardrae · F
@AbbySvenz lol. I'm sure! She probably saw on my profile that I was widowed so she thought I would be a lonely sucker.

I’m sure it’s totally legit @Mardrae

America would be like Heaven in comparison to Nigeria.

@Iwillwait I can imagine

It's very important to remember that, to you, this country has a lot of failings, but the decision to come here is extremely obvious to people who come from worse

Everything is relative and no entity is existing in a vacuum
Mardrae · F
@deadgerbil yes, I realize that. That's not what bothers me- it's the fact that she is asking a total stranger online to adopt her daughter.
4meAndyou · F
No. I loved my son too much to pass him off to some stranger who might abuse him.

Nigeria is a very corrupted country.
Everybody seems to be working a scam from government on down.
Every so often one or two come here and say they're looking for a husband.... ultimately it leads to them asking for money; passport maybe even marriage.

I could understand a desperate Mother keen to get her Daughter to the relative safety of a country that doesn't have quite the male dominated extremes of life there. But like I said watch out for the scams
Mardrae · F
@Picklebobble2 true. I have never wanted children so that's the last scam I would fall for
During the Holocaust it was a thing to do if you were Jewish.
Mardrae · F
@Roundandroundwego so horrifying. I am Jewish myself
That lady obviously wasnt part of SW, otherwise, she would have been lead to believe that America was the fifth level of Hell. LOL

Sounds like a scam

@Mardrae just be careful
Mardrae · F
@SW-User I haven't heard from her since I said no
SW-User
@Mardrae there you go

She's probably a scammer. However, if she was genuine, she is right about Nigeria being worse than the U.S lol. United States may have problems, but Nigeria has many more with regard to poverty.

I couldn't ever separate from my children though, unless their lives were in immediate danger and it was the only way to save them.
