Would you ask a total stranger to adopt your young daughter?

Years ago I friended a woman from Nigeria on Facebook who was in one of my groups. We only chatted a couple of times over the years.
Well she texted me today out of the blue and asked me if I would adopt her daughter!
I thought at first that she was joking because maybe the girl was being bad and Mom was jokingly saying she was going to put her up for adoption.
But she was serious! She explained that Nigeria was a bad country to live in and she wanted a better life for her daughter. So she was I guess randomly asking people on her friends list who lived in America to adopt her daughter to give her a better life!
I explained to her that America is not that great to live in- high crime rates, huge taxes, expensive, crooked government and bad healthcare system, etc. And that I didn't have the money or room in my home for a child.
All she said was that it had to be better than Nigeria.
Could you give up your daughter under those circumstances to a total stranger online?

My first reaction is to wonder whether this "woman" from Nigeria is a scammer. (Nigeria does have that reputation.)

But, to get at your question, I think it is difficult for us who live in relative security to understand how desperate a person can feel living in a country like Nigeria. I can imagine how someone would get to that point, of wanting something better for her daughter, knowing that she herself could never give it to her.

@DrWatson it must be a horrible situation to be in if she is legit

@Mardrae And the horrible situation is one of the reasons there are so many scammers there. There is almost no other way to earn an income! I once heard a report on NPR that said that internet scams had become the third largest sector of the Nigerian economy. (This was many years ago). The largest sector was government, and I forget what the second was.
