What are the cons of NOT having kids?

Top | New | Old
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
As an adoptee who had a horrible childhood I have no real regrets at not having children.

However it would've been fascinating to me to be around someone who was related to me.
YoMomma ·
@AntisocialTroll have you ever tried to find your natural family? Or did you know them?
AntisocialTroll · 56-60, F
@YoMomma Yes and yes but they aren't fascinated by me in the way I am them, so although I've spent time with both my birth parents they weren't really interested in me as a person.

It is MY belief that the decision to whether or not to have children is a PERSONAL one based on an number of factors. including economics and potentially inherited genetic defects.

For myself-I have known-for my entire adult life-that I would NEVER have enough money to support children-to adequately provide for their financial needs-food, medicine, medical care, clothing.

For persons who ARE economically/financially/monetarily secure enough to take care of children-along with the ability to take on the many OTHER challenging responsibilities of parenthood-"more power to you!" :)

Siblings and children who chose not to have kids do not reflect the sandpapering and mirroring that kids provide. They are lovingly ruthless at reflecting back ones foibles and positive traits.

Kids often force one to be less me-centered. If a parent does not learn to give up the sense of control when single, it gets dysfunctional for all. I had the learn to go with the flow much more to remain sane.

A few friends of mine never had kids and as they got older they realized after handling affairs of their own parents, there wouldn't be anyone there for them when they reached that phase of their lives.
My cousins wife did all this genealogy research and found all kinds of interesting things, she told me they have no one to pass this information on too.
Their story ends with them.

I am 64 now and my kids are grown but talking to them and hearing "Dad" is special so without kids you never get to experience that feeling.
JustNik · 51-55, F
Personally, I’m grateful for the perspective. All of the best parts of who I am today were born with them. Some people can get there without them just fine, of course, but I doubt I would have been one of those.

I do know my life and attitude changed, after my son came along.

I would say less family around when you get old, but I know folks who almost never see their children unless the kid’s in trouble or needs something.

So nothing’s guaranteed.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
Potentially you have no one to look after you as you get old...that's not a guarantee if you have kids though....
HobNoblin · 36-40, M
The cons are mostly demographic and societal. With all things sexual reproduction is the ultimate goal as far as nature is concerned. Your instincts turn to species survival and individual survival is forfeit. The obvious personal effect of not having children would be not having the support of children in your old age. That assumes of course that your children actually help you in your old age. If you give rise to sociopaths, you can forget that. They would probably be a threat to you instead.
