Is there something you think a lot of parents do that negatively impacts their kids?

BeJeweled · F
Yes yelling, spanking, calling them names, treating them like dirt, saying they are stupid, and fighting with their other parent in front of them gives terrible results.

I was terrorized as a child. I was chased through the house so many times I lost count, and when I was caught I was slapped as hard as my mother could slap, right across the face. I wonder sometimes if I sustained some brain damage because of all the facial hits.
Stay together in unhappy marriages. Or, on the other end of the spectrum, split up and use their kids as pawns.

The family circling the wagons to protect someone who hurts children.

When there's an abuser or predator I see again, again, and again, the family will deny it and ostracize the child to protect the perpetrator.

Almost everyone I know here who has a childhood abuse or molestation story has a similar story about how their family let them down and still tries to make them reconcile with the abuser.
Sheilding them too much from their own consequences

Being overprotective

Have them. Not everyone is meant to be a parent. Otherwise:

Fail to teach them manners.

Fail to teach them how to act in public.

Tolerate poor behavior.

Fail to emphasize the importance of education.

Fail to demonstrate the importance of good credit.

Spare the rod, spoil the child.

Also, I've seen too many of my peers do too much for their kids...not allowing them to learn/do important things, themselves.

Allow them to go to drag queen predators story hour
Spanking in public
@TexasOutlawTrey Or even in private. Here, someone doing it in public would be arrested and have their kids taken away.

I know they don’t mean harm but so many are providing everything materially to them without them earning those things. It would help to build self-confidence if they would have their children do things to build up skills etc. instead of just giving them everything easily.
