Punishing someone who doesn't know what they did or why doesn't really have any point to it.
And I don't think anyone would say that having severe mental health problems is an excuse for doing what he allegedly did - but it can explain it. It doesn't make it ok but if you know the why then there's somewhere to start from in making amends even if it's simply trying for better provision for mental health care so this kind of thing is less likely in the future.
But that doesn't mean that (assuming he did do it, and while we should always be dubious about media reporting of sensational crimes it seems likely he did) for the foreseeable future he doesn't need to be in some kind of institution (and it's not for us to comment whether that's prison or a hospital, we don't know)

@whowasthatmaskedman if a country doesn't want to pay for proper mental health services availability to the general population BEFORE they harm other people, then that country's society can't legitimately cry about housing mentally ill people AFTER they harmed someone

@ThirstenHowl You are not wrong..And I might branch off from that thought with "If a society puts so many roadblocks in front of infringing on the individuals freedoms and rights, there does come a point where the community is at risk from that individual." With the drug and mental health issues, alarm bells should have been ringing somewhere.😷

I entirely agree that justice must be done. However, it is obvious from the comments here that finding agreement about what constitutes justice in these (presumed) circumstances is not easy.

Well, he confessed to his crime and is on suicide watch after his bail was pulled as an option. So, there is that. Leaving the bodies for someone else to find (his sister) is chilling and unforgivable on top of his actions being disturbing and heartbreaking. No one deserves to be murdered and especially by a trusted family member.

My main thought was, "How come when this happens, the decedent is seldom someone who deserved it?"
I mean what could the Reiner couple have possibly said or did to merit this?

@Wiseacre I guess like Ferise said, maybe the son was wanting money for his bad habits.
Kind of we*rd, in high school I knew this guy who "off'ed" his mom over money, except the family wasn't rich and I do not think the son had any addictions. He got caught less than a couple days later.

My first thought this was somehow connected to the Bondi Beach thing somehow.

Certainly very close together, but check your news feeds for those days and tell me why, of all the things that happened on those days around the world, you choose to link those?
Didn't it happen on the same very day or the next day?

@FreddieUK Reiner was of Jewish heritage and the Bondi attack was reported to be about that as well. It's pretty much all the news talked about that day...all day. And then that happened it appeared to be linked at the time.

@FloorGenAdm Thanks for explaining your thinking. It shows we always need more information than is available immediately after an incident before reaching even tentative conclusions.

I was pleased to learn that the prosecutors are seeking a life sentence sans parole, or the death penalty.👍

Mental illness or not, this is not the way to settle any argument
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
If the guy is guilty. Then the system has failed. Either he knew what he was doing and needs to spend the rest of his hopefully short life locked away. Or he has no idea what he did, and if he ever realises it, then he would want to end himself out of grief. Either way he should never have a chance of freedom again..😷

Did someone say it was?

It's kinda strange though that the "mentally ill" killer managed to stay focused during the first killing then proceeded to the 2nd. I would expect him/her to be shocked after the first killing then run away!
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F
Obviously someone with that potential needs to be locked up no matter what the circumstances
Wiseacre · F
@Notsimilarreally YES
He should be punished regardless.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
The millionaire probably didn’t give him any money. He got what he deserved.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
Of course it’s an excuse they’re not in their right mind
