Rob Reiner and wife killed by their son…

I don’t care about his addiction or mental health issues, it is NOT an excuse for killing anybody, esp. parents. I hope justice will be served.

Punishing someone who doesn't know what they did or why doesn't really have any point to it.

And I don't think anyone would say that having severe mental health problems is an excuse for doing what he allegedly did - but it can explain it. It doesn't make it ok but if you know the why then there's somewhere to start from in making amends even if it's simply trying for better provision for mental health care so this kind of thing is less likely in the future.

But that doesn't mean that (assuming he did do it, and while we should always be dubious about media reporting of sensational crimes it seems likely he did) for the foreseeable future he doesn't need to be in some kind of institution (and it's not for us to comment whether that's prison or a hospital, we don't know)

@Persephonee I agree with you..However, the next problem here is who exactly is being punished? In this case, the community, who will pay for whatever treatment and maintenance he requires for the rest of his life.. From the individual standpoint this is a terrible ethical question. But from the standpoint of society, should those people who follow the law and pay taves to be protected by law enforcement and the courts then pay more to keep these people locked up? If the community is at risk from these people, then something else should be done. The British used to ship them to the colonies..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman Yes we should pay - because the way we look after those who are a) vulnerable and b) guilty of doing something heinous (which given the tendency for retribution, however deserved and understandable, also makes them vulnerable) says more about us as a culture and civilisation than the way we treat people that are really nice to us.

@Persephonee OK. I can accept that.😷
@whowasthatmaskedman if a country doesn't want to pay for proper mental health services availability to the general population BEFORE they harm other people, then that country's society can't legitimately cry about housing mentally ill people AFTER they harmed someone

@ThirstenHowl You are not wrong..And I might branch off from that thought with "If a society puts so many roadblocks in front of infringing on the individuals freedoms and rights, there does come a point where the community is at risk from that individual." With the drug and mental health issues, alarm bells should have been ringing somewhere.😷
@Persephonee Exactly.

Not an excuse.

Rather:

An explanation.
