They may very well have done their best, and maybe their best just wasn't good enough. They're not mutually exclusive.
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@nazgul It's less about parent's trying their best, but more about having to utter that specific phrase in response to criticism. It's a way of shirking any real responsibility

Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
My parents did their best, and no, they were not narcissists. what more can anyone do but their best? Is there something more than the best? Of course, we children used that phrase "they did the best they could" do not remember mom and dad saying that.
I think ungrateful children sometimes want what parents can't provide in terms of extras and feel neglected if they don't get their way all the time.

I do believe the height of narcissism is not saying anything, when everything is wrong.

There are degrees in everything.

If you don't believe anything is wrong, when everything is wrong, you can get no higher in narcissism.

Saying that "You did your best" is at least an acknowledgement of something wrong. Even if you don't put the blame anywhere.

I could give a example of the first case, yet then it would becone political.

Who thinks nothing is EVER wrong with his policies politically?

I don't think that's always true. I say I'm trying my best at being a dad but I never feel like I am.
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
Ok, so there's a few people here with dubious reading comprehension skills that seem to equate trying your best with claiming you did your best. There's a massive difference in the two. Trying to put out a fire is very different from saying you did put out a fire.

Trying means that you are unsure if you are taking the right steps. It implies the possibility of failing. Saying you did your best implies absolute certainty that you could do no better. That there was no possible room for error or improvement. In the end you either do something or you don't.

But to put in simpler terms:
"We put a roof over your head and food on the table." Ok but I have Dyslexia and ADD and you didn't tell me.
Donotfolowme · 51-55, F
That's not a universal fact. It can be true for some but not for all. I wouldn't generalize it.
LordBarbossa · 36-40, T
That explains why it's my moms go-to when talking about my and my sisters' childhoods
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@LordBarbossa Hearing that phrase is usually a red-flag from anyone
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
“My ex was such a narcissist “ was the catch phrase of the year in 2024. In 2023 it was “I’ll have the avo toast “ haha
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@TinyViolins agreed about it being thrown around as a slang term and not true to its real meaning
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@AthrillatheHunt People can exhibit some of the traits without having a full blown personality disorder
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@TinyViolins MOST successful people exhibit several narcissistic traits , but most aren’t narcissists.
Not always true. Sometimes they did the best they could
Fertilization · 36-40, F
You are mistaken.
