Ok, so there's a few people here with dubious reading comprehension skills that seem to equate trying your best with claiming you did your best. There's a massive difference in the two. Trying to put out a fire is very different from saying you did put out a fire.
Trying means that you are unsure if you are taking the right steps. It implies the possibility of failing. Saying you did your best implies absolute certainty that you could do no better. That there was no possible room for error or improvement. In the end you either do something or you don't.
But to put in simpler terms:
