Would a parent be right to restrict their childs content under this circumstance?

The following is NOT based on personal experience. It is strictly a hypothetical situation.Suppose a parent has a child-I suppose male or female doesnt matter-who is around 13-14 yrs.old.The child is unusually bright and is extremely interested in politics and world affairs,to the point where they stay informed of such things to a far greater degree than most kids their age would. Now suppose that this child found the current state of affairs upsetting and it was causing the child to have undue stress and anxiety.Under these circumstances, would it be appropriate for the parent to forbid the child from reading or watching any media that was politically oriented;in effect "banning"the child from such topics?

not banning, but explaining things to the child.
Obviously, both the parents and child are highly intelligent and capable of objective reasoning. The parents would discuss the plan of using restrictive measures to protect the boy. They most likely will conclude that taking the more heavy- handed route is likely going to increase stress and anxiety.

They would probably decide to include the boy in his own plan of action. Coming up with less intrusive ways to protect the boy as well as a way for him to be slowly returned to his interest very slowly and have him tracking his progress rewarding him in little ways that help build self -confidence, and his building coping skills he previously was lacking in.

no, totally inappropriate... forbidding the child to access information will not reduce but increase anxiety, as the fertile intelligence will intuit that things may be even more problematic than they are.

better by far for the parents to educate themselves to the point where they can discuss world events honestly and openly with child, address anxieties, draw lessons from history, help child to understand and analyse the real world.

cut the child off from the real world and you leave it open to conspiracy theories, fake news and the purveyors of such dangerous nonsense.

that would be tantamount to child abuse.

i am personally eternally grateful to my parents for opening up the real world to me at an early age... and me to it.

I think it would be okay to limit phone time and tv time. A heavy diet of the mobile phone and tv isn't healthy, anyway. Balance in all things.

Yes; to a point. Explain things to her and talk it over. If the girl/boy is still stressed, then remove the cause of stress.

The prime objective of the parent is to protect their child. But parents are not perfect and in particular cases might require guidance.

As a practical matter, they can't. Kids can access such things at school, etc.

maybe wise if this is upsetting them so but you cannot ban it one hundred percent as there will be other ways internet newspapers. davidt8899]

No, but would be extremely important to help them, even professional help if necessary

I would not forbid them. I would focus more on managing anxiety because stopping them from watching news is a short term solution only. What about later in life. I would focus on helping them to deal with info they don't like but I would help them balance as well. They can't just do politics they need to have well rounded life.
