Jobs I will never take again and making enough to live off of
Sales, customer service, retail, food service, hospitality, and labor intensive jobs like janitors or home health care. I had a couple of these jobs for short periods of time with minimal hours and I did not last long at any of them. Also house cleaning is labor intensive. I feel bad for people who have no choice but to do these kind of jobs. The pay is crappy and dealing with the public I always found to be draining and home health care you are a homemaker cleaning running errands etc. you see people in distressing circumstances/ environments and it may not always be safe or healthy working conditions going to somebody’s home. My therapist pointed out no jobs are completely unskilled even if you don’t get an education or extensive vocational training for them. I called these jobs unskilled minimum wage crap jobs meaning they were terrible jobs for a lot of people but my therapist asked me not to refer to these jobs as mentioned above because it was demeaning to people who worked those jobs. I don’t look down on people who work these jobs despite what my therapist thought but I only meant often the work is grueling and they are thankless jobs with no work life balance and terrible pay. She says if there is a job, it’s a needed service. Yes I know we need these people although with AI some jobs will become obsolete. No jobs are unskilled because you need to learn the ropes for any type of job. You can’t just be hired and not trained. I honestly feel terrible for people who are stuck in these kind of jobs. I had them and I could not do them. I don’t have the mentality of doing whatever it takes to survive even if a job makes me miserable and drained. The kind of jobs I would be more compatible with require higher education and vocational training courses. I am not a high energy person who is good at multitasking and handling demanding people and situations. I am not a detached person who can escape compassion fatigue. I don’t do well in fast paced environments with constant changes. I need to focus on my education and vocational training to get the kind of jobs/careers that I would be better at. I need mental stimulation and to use my intellect in my work. A remote flexible career path would be best where I can choose my hours and when and where I work. Also it would be good to choose how I work for example in short bursts or longer steady sessions with adequate breaks to stay focused as long as the project or task was done very well and by the deadline. I need that kind of job and with an agency that cares about its freelancers or employees and gives consistent well compensated work. I will take lower wages in the beginning. As I’m getting experience. If I have a question about something, I would like there to be community and support to answer my questions and give detailed feedback. I want to actually like a career/job. I hope to be working part time hours as I think full time would burn me out. If I could work as a full time employee I would. The benefits and sick leave would be helpful. The question is part time enough to live on if I scale back my expenses? It doesn’t seem to be. If I make enough to supplement my disability benefits without going over the income limits I will still be protected for affordable housing. But if I want to get off disability benefits I may need to work close to full time to make enough of a salary to live with housemates. The way the rents are I can’t afford my own apartment or house without splitting the rent or mortgage with at least several other people. So I can keep my rents at a few hundred per month. Subsidized housing would help me live on my own with no sharing an apartment or house. We all would get our own bathrooms and bedrooms for privacy ideally if co living. I have looked into other housing alternatives including doing part time work in exchange for reduced or free rent. For at least the next few years I’ll be living with my parents in their home and my sister may move out before me. She is waiting to save enough to put a down payment on a house. She has lived on her own before but moved back. We don’t have to pay rent to our parents as with some immigrants mentality families are much more interdependent.. If I work about full time I could make $ 50,000-$100,000 annually before taxes which today is not very much unfortunately. If I could I would move to a foreign country with more affordable cost of living and where say $30,000-$60,000 yearly I could live like a queen I would. But my supports for my mental health and my family are in this country. If I had no mental health problems or did not struggle with motivation, I could move anywhere that would take me on a digital nomad visa. I think the American dream is in other countries now. Sure for the rich and wealthy of course there is the American dream because they can afford it. For the working class and middle class it is harder to get ahead. Once decades ago yes if you worked hard , you could achieve the American dream. Maybe in the 1970s or 1980s or even before in the 1950s and 1960s . Things were more affordable. You could afford a beautiful house in the suburbs, townhouse, or fancy apartment ,household shopping, maybe a car or two. One income in a household could afford all these things. Maybe an education for your kids to go to a great college or university without student loans being needed. Or even go to a trade school that would be fine too. You could take a long distance vacation once or twice a year. There are countries in the world I could get by on $2,000-$3,000 per month comfortably and not go broke. What is my point? The American dream is dying because of how expensive everything is. Some people are giving up on America and relocating to other countries for cheaper cost of living and higher quality of life. Many immigrants still try to come to America that is true but are probably pretty disillusioned by the end of their stay. My own family started over in America and did work hard and did provide a good life for their children. But in a generation the opportunities decreased and achieving adult milestones became a struggle by the mid 2000s. There are some opportunities with remote work and you can change your location to for example smaller towns to mid sized metros in the Midwest and South where comparatively the cost of living is cheaper. There are certain industries that are thriving and not saturated yet like language translation services, certain careers in legal industry, healthcare, technology, engineering, certain sciences, skilled trades, etc. but also the competition for jobs has become fierce and cutthroat a college degree used to put a near guarantee you would get a good career with benefits but not so much anymore. Not everything is remote though and going to these dirt cheap places often comes at a cost like losing amenities you are used to and low wages if not working remotely. Mid sized metros still have more economic opportunity than small towns. It is just a mess. But I will never work another sales, customer service, retail, food service, home health care ( homemaker), janitorial or house cleaning gig ever again. My plan because networking is not my strength is to build a few skills in which I become very adept at that allow me to work from anywhere with a computer connection and despite my mental illness and in addition introversion I can make myself in demand enough to not be out of work. At the other jobs I have mentioned minimum wage customer service or labor intensive jobs like janitorial work you are easily replaceable anyway. Workers can’t complain right because they need the poor paying job. There aren’t a lot of employee rights in this country as a whole. Part of me feels like I will never be able to afford a decent lifestyle on my own and I’ll remain poor on government benefits. The other part of me wants to get off disability and work to get myself financially self sufficient and independent as much as possible. The only reason I have a decent lifestyle now is because of my parents. They are lucky enough to have good paying jobs even though they have long commutes. They are the reason I have decent clothes, good food, a comfortable roof over my head and nice things generally. The problem is I’m scared I will not be able to afford all my necessities and then have savings left over after. This is a country in which failure can land you on the street. I fear I will make too much for getting a lot of help but not enough to fully sustain myself without scrounging . I wish life was easier and a part time job was all you needed to be self sustainable. I know I am not burning myself out with working more than 30 hours per week. That’s five days a week six hours per day. That’s enough. If I can push myself to work full time and not crash and burn no more than 35-40 hours a week. I refuse to work more than that. I will not take overtime and I’m not going to spend my life working 50, 60 or more hours per week. I’m not working two to three jobs at a time that’s bonkers. I want to be able to have a life with my hobbies, passions, and interests and maybe volunteer and travel a bit. I have looked into living in manufactured homes, rv motorhomes, tiny homes, earthen masonry cottages like adobe and cob and get help to build it. I have looked into houseboats. Working part time that comes with free housing etc. I have looked into house sitting but in between assignments where would I live? I don’t want to live on a yacht or cruise ship and work in hospitality. Eldercare, childcare, or live in animal care options have been mentioned. You could be a groundskeeper or help maintain property. There are different options. I just wonder if any of them will work for me. Some jobs include housing as part of the contract. I just have to figure out what will work for me and what will not.
