Do you hate it when you're trying to go to sleep in a hotel and you hear the sounds of slamming doors and laughing, shouting?

I hated when that happened when I worked in a hotel. Guests would call the front desk, and I’d have to call the rooms it might be (because no one seemed to know which room was the offending room) and ask them to keep it down. If no one answered or if they refused to listen, I had to call security (which I hated to do) and ask them to handle it.

I lived in a college apartment like that 12 years ago. I was trying to take a nap, and this one guy and his girl were apparently having a nasty fight, judging by the yelling and the sound of stuff being knocked over.

Yep. It happened to us a couple of weeks ago when traveling through Louisiana. They finally got quiet around midnight. it was a Hilton hotel, not a "no-tell motel."

Is that why the room next to the elevator or stairway always seems to be available.
Especially if I’m not the one laughing and shouting and slamming doors.

No, I don’t mind the commotion.
I don't care - it usually dies down.
