Do you find it rude when a random guy tells you to smile?

I remember reading about women being angry when guys told them to smile. Today I was browsing at the grocery store and a random guy stood by me a little then said "you should smile" when walking away. It didn't really offend me I was just confused why I was apparently supposed to be more cheerful when picking out some crackers?

What's the point of telling a stranger to smile? 馃槙

I've never found it rude, exactly, just annoying. First of all, it's just goofy. If you walked around smiling while choosing on something in a grocery store, someone just might ask "what are you smiling about?".

Also, maybe something tragic has recently happened in a person's life...and they just don't feel like smiling at ALL.

Yes I tell them to fuck off. How dare you, you have no idea what someone is going through. Ignorant invalidation from a stranger.
The last time someone said that to me it was the Xmas season and my father had not long ended his life and I was walking down the street hurting like fuck and some asshole lent out his car window just to patronizingly tell me to smile. I felt like breaking his damn jaw
[@455213,Mrsbetweenfatandfit] thanks 馃尮
[@656163,MushroomFaerie] Really sorry about your loss, and the rude pricks you had to put up with
[@656163,MushroomFaerie] sorry that you lost your father
That鈥檚 part of it, the fact that they feel the need to tell a total stranger to smile with no idea if you have any reason to be smiling. The other part is that no one ever tells men to smile. If he鈥檚 looking serious, people assume he has a reason, and doesn鈥檛 just exist as 鈥渆ye candy鈥. So yes, I consider it rude coming from a stranger.
[@328496,bijouxbroussard] There's no children's version of sir, that's what I meant.

like there is for maam (miss)

so the idea that designation can be different according to sex, rubs me the wrong way

analogy: men are not asked to smile in the street for women
[@1011311,Stilltryinghard] Right, that was what I said.

[@1011311,Stilltryinghard] Not in America...it's just plain weird unless it's in a joking or Mom's mad at ya kind of way

I think it's stupid. Just like, why do they think they're worthy of seeing my smile? Why do I need to smile to make them more comfortable? Like, just leave me and my bitch face alone. Lol

[@867153,xiehyue] lmao right? I thought sorry my resting bitchface is so offensive 馃槀

I do find it a bit odd. I鈥檝e never even felt the urge to approach any person, man or woman and let them know I think they ought to change their expression 馃し馃徑鈥嶁檧锔

Oh yea, I would have had a nice response to that for sure.

According to a lot of people I should smile more...like all the time. I must look better when I am smiling...

does anyone realize that this is actually what they mean?

"You should smile" = "Your face is prettier when you smile"
[@1845,JaggedLittlePill] Yes, because no matter what else may be going on in your life, being pretty is what鈥檚 most important. 馃槒

[@328496,bijouxbroussard] Yes, of course it is!

It鈥檚 rude. I鈥檇 get [@6912,PinkStarburst] to throat punch him and then see who鈥檚 smiling.

I'd say how about you wear a cologne that doesn't smell like toilet duck and i might have a reason to look happy.
[@557074,PerthSurfer] Or a nice joke even...

[@1011311,Stilltryinghard] You'd be exempt because of the laundry powder 馃槃
[@557074,PerthSurfer] I do my clothes at home, the mags in those places are so lame.
wow, i'd find that incredibly rude. if I see someone visibly upset, I may ask them if they are ok. But you just know the same bloke isn't going to say that to men. I'm confused to be honest, what was the goal?

I鈥檝e got you on this 馃槒
The next time this happens, keep some faux blood capsules on hand. The next meddlesome fuck who demands a smile will be met with this lovely visage.
Cheers 馃嵎

Because if you smiled, they would want to do you...but since you are not smiling, they don't. 馃

They are so full of themselves they figure you will value that constructive criticism from a complete stranger...even though they, themselves, appear to be warthogs. 馃槀
4meAndyouF
[@1011311,Stilltryinghard] They do it all the time...everywhere.

I've met this type frequently...in my singles club. Most of them can't get a girlfriend.

Secure in their self-delusions, they are convinced they are God's gift to women, and they assume automatically that they are entitled to critique your qualities. ANY of them.

Oh...also, you should never even speak to a man who is deluded in this way, because even if you are asking him to pass a box of crakcers, he will assume you are hitting on him.
[@387713,4meAndyou] He probably IS a cracker.

Ugh I dont like to be told what to do. Period.
FernieF
Only males do that to women...I believe in their warped minds they feel that if you smile AT them...you accept them....insecurity
[@331316,Fernie] It is a demand for women to reassure them that you as a woman... exist for them.

That's how it makes me feel, or used to.
FernieF
[@1011311,Stilltryinghard] I agree! The reasons may vary slightly but it's ALL about them
lovelywarpedlemon26-30, F
Lol depends on how he says it/whether he's got empathy
lovelywarpedlemon26-30, F
[@1011311,Stilltryinghard] It's not "accosting" though. Sure, there are plenty of dumb social rules, and some guys want to have power over women, but sometimes they just want to cheer someone up and don't know what else to say. Maybe they lack awareness/social skills, and it's annoying, but it's not always a passive-aggressive attack.
[@417823,lovelywarpedlemon] a simple smile from him would work better wouldn't it?
lovelywarpedlemon26-30, F
[@1011311,Stilltryinghard] oh i just now read your paragraph, guess i missed the context of this situation
iamnikki26-30, F
Exactly. Never understood that. Am I supposed to walk around with a clown smile plastered on my face? 馃ぁ馃
ChilledStone26-30, F
I just ignore it, got more important things to get upset about
FernieF
[@530389,ChilledStone] who said anything about being upset? I can see you are one of those little girls who takes her freedom for granted...not a feminist bone in your body...only males do that to women...it's a control thing
TheDarknessHasFallen36-40, M
[c=#BF0080] I thin he was trying to be encouraging, however, people DO ahve aright to facial express anyway they wanbt to/ Also, just because you dont smile, you could be smiling inwardly! 鈽猴笍馃尫 [/c]
FernieF
[@1016515,TheDarknessHasFallen] Nope! Only males say that crap to women...there is SO much more to it...but, since you are male...you will never see it
Geno199626-30, M
Because some people always just look miserable and like they have no emotions. I get told to smile sometimes, too. By both guys and girls. A girl I used to be friends with and worked with had told me I should smile more.
Diamonddog26-30, M
Eh i've had people say that to me and they're just being positive. Maybe you'll make em smile.
[@877165,Chaoticneutral] Most women wouldn't ogle a strange guy in the street that way.
Diamonddog26-30, M
[@1011311,Stilltryinghard] I don't know if i'd compare basic interaction to ogling.
Discobiscuit26-30, F
Yes, I get it at work sometimes. There's nothing to smile about there 馃し馃ぃ
