From what I understand (Grandfather was a coin collector) it's the acid and oils from constant handling reacting with the metals. Older coins more so than newer, hence the tweezers and gloves. I wouldn't discount the coin farts though 馃槅

I think its an eletrical thing.
The salt and sweat in our hands along with our own minute eletrical. energy excites the zinc snd copper found in many coins.
