Why do coins smell funny after you touch them?

They never have an odor before handling them, but once you grab them or touch them, they have that weird metallic scent.

Some sort of chemical reaction maybe? Between your skin and the metal that is

@BlueMetalChick Was just my first instinct, seems like the logical explanation. Could be down to coin farts for all I know to be honest aha

From what I understand (Grandfather was a coin collector) it's the acid and oils from constant handling reacting with the metals. Older coins more so than newer, hence the tweezers and gloves. I wouldn't discount the coin farts though 馃槅

I think its an eletrical thing.
The salt and sweat in our hands along with our own minute eletrical. energy excites the zinc snd copper found in many coins.
Not to mention our hand anf their moisture heat the couns up a bit.

It's from people not washing their hands after going number 1 or 2 that ought to make you think twice before ever doing that again 馃あ
