Generally speaking we are taught what to think, not how to think.
As teaching how to think is quite often the preserve of various people not often listened to, or taken notice of, the charade continues.

They believe the older generation is old- fashioned and out of date with things and reject advice. “Things are different now” is what my daughter told me when I warned her about using credit cards. She got in so deep she ended up filing bankruptcy.
SteelHands · 70-79, M
@cherokeepatti My kids were A students at math and one of them is an accountant. They haven't , understanding the crucial importance of what kinds and how long into the interest rates as a function of income vs debt weight. Your daughter isn't entirely wrong. Mine only didn't overextended themselves because they always paid everything ahead of time and now their credit limit is somewhere in the stratosphere.
I do sympathize tho. Middle income homes going for a quarter million dollars and cars costing 50 thou just sends shivers up my spine. To me that is way out of my economic comfort zone.

It's incumbent on every new generation to fight for change and make progress against the reactionary forces of the previous generation. That's why we're not like society was in 1540, or 1865, or even 1980. It will always be a fight against those who wish to maintain the status quo. But change always comes and you can't halt progress. Hope lies with each new generation.

We break the cycle of generations, understanding and learning.

Young kids think they already know everything. I know I did. I deeply resented my parents trying to tell me what to do, how to live, and where to go to college. If a child resists all wisdom, how can he or she learn from the past?
Also, you are pre supposing that parents and teachers HAVE some actual wisdom to impart...that is not always true.

Pretend to play follow the leader while they pretend follow the leader is thinking for yourself. Then wherever you can, walk your own path even if it means those fair weather friends turn against you.
They would have eventually done that eventually anyway.

No one is going to educate you in order for you to overthrow them. They will only teach you enough to be subservient, know your place and bow/curtsy to your "betters".
It's up to us to stuff that kind of thinking in the dustbin of history and move forward.

@jackieash oh look at you. Ready to overthrow something already. How many helicopters ya got stacked so far.
I hope it's a lot. Probably gonna need a couple tanks and missle sites.
Don't go down that stupid path like that other country, thinking that you can resist the power of a superpower willing to throw a million rounds of 762s at you.

@SteelHands What are you rambling on about?

It's not an exaggeration - our neighbors gave their kids mini cars and mini us flags attached. Climate denial is being passed on.

What is forward though? Where is the end goal?

SW-User
@cyberdude28 Why must there be a set goal? A set of standards? A bottom line? Why can't a person's life and experiences progress as they want?
Forward to me is a long story. I believe in people beings individuals not defined and designed to live and express a certain way.
Its funny a good amount understood what I meant by this post. Seeing the cycle isca heart wrecking thing because you’ll never vuew the world the same.

@Gloomy I actually laughed at this one....

Because we don't learn from history.

That’s why it’s important to document and acknowledge our history, all of it, no matter how ugly, gruesome or embarrassing we may find it.
And make sure that it is taught, accurately, to future generations.
We can’t ban books or movies, because it’s important to know how historical figures thought, even the ones our countries want to revere, even when they were wrong.
Because otherwise, we will repeat those mistakes.
Moreover, we’ll find ways to justify them.
😞

It’s America history.
ViciDraco · 41-45, M
The very point of teaching history is to prevent the worst of things from being repeated. Problems are exposed when some people disagree about what elements of the past are mistakes.
I will say that in my case, I ended up quite different from my father in world view and in life path. So I do not think everyone is trapped in that cycle. And we tend to learn from peers as well or better than our elders, so a few breaking the molds are all that is really needed to enact change from generation to generation. We just have to hope that newer generations seek to spill from those broken molds in positive directions.
Through the span of history, we live in an Era of relative calm and peace. We have definition seen some dips and setbacks, but when measured against centuries we are still in a positive trend.

People are people, right. We always repeat history's mistakes because most of history's mistakes are brought on by just... sorta how we are.
But obviously not all history is the same. What we can do is build societies, organizations, structures.
Like people with too much power tend to be tyrants, but you can build in checks and balances to prevent that from taking place. That sorta thing. People remain as they always have, but our societies certainly change. That is shit we can change.
