Amazon ad is promoting Extra Thick Yoga Mat

Isn't the purpose of a yoga mat to make the surface you are doing yoga on softer?

In my experience it depends on the type of yoga. If you do lots of balances for example then a thick mat makes it difficult. But if you are doing gentle yoga in perhaps a less than greatly heated village hall in the winter then a thick mat is good.

p.s I have both and am speaking from experience.
