What's the 'trick' part of 'trick or treat' for Halloween meant to be about?

Some old Pagan thing that has persisted through the years. The veil between the living and dead or some such causing mischief for one night. Till an old lady in America somewhere got tired of her roses getting trashed on the night and came up with the "Treat" part. 🤔 I think.

When we were kids, we only played tricks on those grumpy families who didn't give treats. The tricks were usually something like soaping car windows, hiding porch furniture, or putting dog poop in front of their door. We never damaged anything.

I believe its extortion under another name. If you dont pay off the little gangsters in costumes, they throw eggs and other nasty stuff at your house or trash the place in some other manner.. I am more inclined to release the hounds on them..😷
