UK Energy Emergency

Has been announced there will be an energy cap at 2500 and further help for households but they dont say what . So hopefully in days to come we will hear more .

Makes me laugh.. they are not helping us? They have control over this. Increase everything.. then offer to help which dont even cover half.

That 2500 is what has been reported as the estimated average annual household gas and electricity bill; bit it would be interesting to know what the original calculations had really said, and how they calculated the average or mean, whichever it is.

I am not a statistician, but I do know figures like this can be horribly skewed if they are merely arithmetical averages or means. (I know average does not equal mean, but I am not even sure of their very important difference).

Even now £2500 a year seems high for most households, but like many costs, is it influenced by the much larger values from the much smaller proportions of those to the overall count of values.

Once again the assistance is incorrect, I'm not sure if the government does this on purpose. I'd like to think if you take care in a normal sized home your energy bill will not breach that figure (£2500), if on the other hand you own a mansion, stately home or palace the capped figure will allow a nice respite from your large bills.

The Energy Price Guarantee limits the amount you can be charged per unit of gas or electricity, so your exact bill amount will continue to be influenced by how much energy you use.

@OldBrit Fair enough. For it to be reported as:
"Liz Truss announces energy bills will be fixed for two years at £2.5k for a typical home. " (BBC)
"Liz Truss to freeze energy bills at £2,500 a year average, funded by borrowing" (The Guardian)
Is wrong.

@GeniUs I agree but it is the usual dumbing down and poor explanation through the media, largely as I believe these days most of those reporting are there for reasons other than their intelligence.

Though to be fair the Guardian does say "average" which is basically true.

People just need to be sensible. No decking out your garden in Xmas lights like it’s vegas.
