A 22-year-old North Carolina man was hospitalized late Saturday after what emergency workers described as a dangerous alcohol-fueled dare involving Pop Rocks, Coca-Cola, and a turkey baster.
Stewart Lansbury, of Charlotte, was taken to the emergency room after reportedly inserting a packet of Pop Rocks into his rectum, then using a turkey baster to add Coca-Cola as part of an $80 bet with friends.
According to people familiar with the incident, the group had been drinking when Lansbury agreed to the challenge. Within minutes, he began complaining of severe abdominal pain and bleeding, prompting his friends to call 911.
Doctors later determined Lansbury had suffered a serious internal injury that required emergency surgery. Hospital staff said the injury was not caused by an “explosion,” as some online posts claimed, but by pressure, irritation, and trauma from the stunt.
Surgeons were able to repair the damage before infection spread, and Lansbury is expected to recover. Medical staff said he was fortunate to have received treatment quickly, as untreated colon injuries can become life-threatening.
Friends told responders Lansbury did complete the dare and collected the $80 before being taken to the hospital. He has since reportedly said the money was “not worth it.”
