Does anyone remember when thongs were footwear? now they are flip flops.

In Australia they are still called thongs, although it might be worth us adopting the flip flop thing given the popularity of the bikini

Yes. In my lifetime they've been "thong sandals", "thongs", "shower shoes"(when made from rubber) and only fairly recently, "flip-flops".
