IMHO it was a set up. You create two people who don't know what death or lying is. You tell them not to eat the tree and stretch the truth about dying if you eat it and then Satan goes and tells them that they won't die and it will make them more like their favorite being ... well why wouldn't they believe him?
Even you or I would have difficulty avoiding being persuaded by a super powered being gifted in lying.
But all that aside... Why put the tree there in the first place?? To test them? God doesn't need to do tests. He is supposed to already know.
