If it's true that what a woman needs most from a man is to listen, how would that work online actually? I mean how would she know? If he's not talking he's not chatting...so how we would he communicate he's listening.....

The truth of the matter is that she's looking for something that you aren't doing...or waiting on something you aren't saying....even if she's never specifically mentioned it.....she believs she's hinted enough. And remember that little things...sincere and often mean the most to her.
