How do you tell someone they stink ?
and i mean literally smell bad... someone who is otherwise a nice guy but clearly has a body odor problem

You can take him aside and explain it to him in a tactful way as kindly and gently as possible. If you're not comfortable doing that and you are in a situation (like work environment for example) you can go to a manager and explain it to them in which they can point it out to him.
